Poplar Bluff is home to one of the oldest and most prolific firearms manufacturing districts in the United States. The district was formed in 1853 when three men, John S. Davenport, Samuel Fenton and James Dixon, pooled their money to buy a pistol factory in Poplar Bluff. The site they selected was on what is now Main Street. By 1860, the district had four pistols factories and twenty-four rifles. In that year, too, an act was passed Congress which authorized the importation of arms for the purpose of suppressing insurrectionary activities within the United States. This allowed for increased production at the district's five pistols factories as well as at two rifle factories. The Panic of 1873 led to a decline in production at all five pistols factories but did not cause a decrease at any rifle factory; nevertheless, it caused some dropouts from these industries and made it difficult for them to compete with larger firms). It also led to a decline in demand for revolvers which were becoming more popular due to new laws suppressingfirearms (e.g., Second Amendment). In 1875— eighteen years after its creation—the Colt Arms Company became dominant in this industry and continued producing revolver models until 1899 when Winchester took over that monopoly firm. In 1902–1903, company president John Browning designed a new type of revolver known as “Black powder cartridges” which gave handguns their first significant competitive advantage against revolvers (they could now be fired without reloading). Because Black powder cartridges required longer Magazine Aids than standard ammunition, they soon became almost universal among law enforcement officers around the country (except where firearms were outlawed or regulated by state legislatures)). Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,621 at the 2010 census. The community name comes from Poplar Creek which flows through the town. The first settlers in what is now Poplar Bluff were farmers who came to the area in the early 1800s. In 1834, two men named Hardesty and Smith built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. It was their first home and they named it "Poplar Bluffs". They raised crops and livestock there for many years until they decided to move away because of lack of water and other natural resources. In 1853, George Washington Hardesty founded an agricultural school in Springdale calledSpringdale Agricultural College which still operates today as Eastern Illinois University-Springdale. In 1865, John Pritchard moved his family to Poplar Bluff from Hackberry Township due to the unreliability of local water supplies. He cleared land and began building homes on it in 1866. By 1870, Poplar Bluff had become a thriving community with over 100 residents. A post office was established here in 1872, and by 1880 it had grown into a fullfledged village with its own storehouse and library. By 1910, however, population growth had slowed down so much that PoplarBluff became an unincorporated community once again. The popularity of agriculture has always been one of the mainstay industries in this small town; even after economic conditions changed during the Great Depression throughout most of America (the depression struck hardest nearpoplarsouthwest), poplar bluffs continued to thrive as one of America's poorest towns - despite having no direct access to any major river or highway networks outside their own boundaries!
