Ozark, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. It is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River, about 21 miles (34 km) south of Springfield and 25 miles (40 km) north of St. Louis. The population was 1,919 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Ozark were farmers who arrived in 1811 from Pennsylvania. They built a log cabin on a bend in the Arkansas River and named their village for William O'Hara, an officer with the United States Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1820, J. Denson moved to Ozark from Illinois and began farming land that he had bought from Pierre Leduc, one of Canada's first fur trappers. Leduc had established himself as a successful fur trader in what is now northwest Kansas and western Illinois before moving to Missouri in 1818 to marry Eliza Mason; they set up home at Mount Moriah near where Ozark stands today. Leduc's son John Denson started out farming too but soon developed into a successful entrepreneur; he served as mayor of Springfield from 1851 to 1861 and as governor of Misouri from 1865 to 1870; his business ventures included developing quarries near modern Springfield and installing electric lights over his old flour mill on Main Street in downtown Ozark.. Famed songwriter Woody Guthrie spent time living among farmers around Ozark before leaving for New York City early in life; his music was based partly upon experiences he had there while working on a farm near Carbondale.. In 1922, Homer Siskel produced an MGM movie about life in Ozark called "Ozark". Ozark, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 7,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield- Carthage Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Ozark" comes from an Osage Indian word meaning "the place where they hunt." In 1819, Captain James K. Polk and his party were surveying a route for a possible wagon road from St. Louis to Council Bluffs when they discovered a convenient spot for trade on the bluffs overlooking the Arkansas River. They named their settlement after this location - Ozark (pronounced oh-Zahrk). The first settler in Ozark was John Crouch who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin near present day Parkville and started trading with other pioneers who had also come to live in the area around what is now Ozark. Over time, many more settlers came to Ozark and it became one of central Missouri's most important towns. The town prospered because it was close to two major transportation routes - the train tracks that ran through Warsaw and Springfield and the waterwheel that powered mills in nearby Carthage. During World War II, Ozark played an important role as a munitions plant which produced shells for Allied forces fighting in Europe. The plant closed down during the war but continued operations as an arms dealership until 1984 when it finally closed its doors forevermore due to budget restraints within government agencies throughout America during that decade. Today, much of what used to be done at the munitions plant remains unaltered - including some unusual features such as three underground carpenters' workshops which still function today!
