By the early 1960s, there were only a few businesses left in town and the population had declined to around 50 people. In 1961, ozarks historic district was designated as part of the National Register of Historic Places.. On Jan. 1, 1836, the first white man set foot on what is now Ozark, Mo. He was a farmer named John Chilton who surveyed the area and proposed the name for the new town. The town's first settler was James Aiken.
