In 1847, Ozark County was created from parts of Randolph and Pulaski counties. The county seat was at Carthage. The first courthouse was built in 1849 on the current site of the Missouri State Capitol. The county experienced some economic fluctuations during the late 19th century, but overall it experienced significant growth throughout its history. These officials later went on to become highly respected members of their communities. Today, Ozark is one of the most culturally rich areas in Missouri; its residents are known for their creative arts Festivalivals, colorful festivals such as Oktoberfest and pumpkin patches, and antique stores that sell anything from farm equipment to porcelain figurines.
Ozark is located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It has a population of about 133,000 people as of 2010. The town was founded in 1836 by Jacob and Rebecca Addison, settlers from Kentucky who had come to claim land east of the Mississippi River. Adding to the town's early prominence were its two main rivers: the Arkansas River and the Missouri River. These rivers gave Ozark its name - "Where the Rivers Meet."
