Ozark, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southeast Missouri. The population was 6,811 at the 2010 census and it is the most populous community in Clifton County. It is also one of the fastest-growing towns in Missouri. Ozark has a rich history that dates back to 1818 when United States Major General James K. Polk founded a military post on what is now known as Old Highway 1 near present-day Ozark. The first permanent settler in what became Ozark was John Chapman who arrived about 1820 from Easton, Pennsylvania. By 1840, there were 20 stores open along Highway 1 with an estimated population of 1,500 people living within 5 miles of town center on either side of the main highway artery which then consisted of three unpaved roads making travel between settlements very difficult if not impossible.
