Most people who live within Ozark County identify themselves as Republicans or conservative independents (although there are manyDemocrats as well). The county government leans rightward politically: all five members on the board OFZC (the elected body responsible for major decisions) are Republicans while all six members on the commission charged with administering justice are conservatives or Republican appointees. Although there have been several local rebellions against this political alignment over recent years – most notably against plans by some residents to build an open-air mall – overall things seem pretty stable hereabouts considering how large an area this is!

Ozark, Missouri is a small town in southwestern Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by the O'Donnells and named for the Ozarks, an area of central Arkansas that includes much of what is now Ozark. The town has been shrinking since the early 21st century, as its population has plummeted from over 1,000 to just over 100 residents. The first settlers in Ozark arrived during the 1830s and 1840s, when surveyors reported rich land to be available in this region. The land was originally owned by squatters who had laid claim to it while still living on horseback or wagon trains across the Great Plains. In 1836, John O'Donnell offered his share of 640 acres (24 square miles) of land near present-day Springfield to Toombs County for $5 per acre. This donation became known as "the Ozark Donation." In 1840, two brothers - John Hickey and James Moberly - settled east of Ozark on 640 acres (24 square miles) also given to them for $5 per acre. The men named their new community after themselves – Hickey's Creek (named for him), Moberly's Ridge (after Moberly's home range), and O'Donnell's Station (named for John O'Donnell). As early as 1835, there were references to a post office called Parkerville but no mail service operated until 1860. After serving briefly as a store stop on the Pacific Railroad between St Louis and Easton Heights in1860-61, Parkerville became the local post office at its current location in 1865. The first school opened in Ozark in 1836; it was moved from Hickey's Creek to present-day Springfield later that year. When Springfield closed its doors at the end of 1861 due to poor health reasons, students 9th through 12th grade attending local schools continued instruction at Parkerville until 1870; thereafter Rockville Elementary School served as Springfield's primary school until 1943 when it merged with Central High School into one large high school building that is now Central Middle School
Ozark was founded in 1836 by George and Anna Payne. The town was named after the Ozarks, a range of hills located in southwestern Missouri. The Payne brothers were the first white men to settle in Ozark and began trading goods with the local Native Americans. In 1839, they built a cabin on what is now Forest Hill Drive. They soon realized that their settlement could not handle the additional population growth, so they migrated to Springfield, Illinois in 1840. George Payne died in Springfield before he could provide descendants with a home there. his wife Anna moved back to Ozark and continued running the business until her death about 1880.
