Ozark is a small town in Pulaski County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Ozark was founded in 1855 by Nathan Bedford Forrest and named for the Ozarks of Kentucky. When the Kansas–Missouri border was redrawn in 1876, Ozark became part of Missouri. It has since regained its original name and status as a small town. The first permanent settler in what is now Ozark was Seth Warner who arrived from Illinois in 1847. He built a cabin on the side of a hill about two miles east of present-day Ozark. Warner's cabin still stands, used as an office building by the post office until it closed in 1992. In 1850 Nathan Bedford Forrest came to this area and established himself as a cattleman and land speculator; he named his new community after his home state of Kentucky where he had been born three years earlier. In 1861 Forrest was elected president of Confederate Missouri (the Unites States before 1861). After Vicksburg was surrendered by Union forces on April 12, 1865, most Confederates moved south to Arkansas or Texas; Forrest chose to stay and fight with General Ulysses S. Grant's Union army against Sherman's Sherman Crossroads Movement north of Memphis, Tennessee. In 1870 John Waddell set up business dairy farming near present-day Prague; this area became known as Waddell Bottom because many settlers brought their herds down there during winter months when no other place would let them farm due to snowdrifts that high! By 1880 Waddell had made enough moneyoff his dairy venture to buy out John Fenton’s interest in Czechoslovakia Lumber Co., becoming one of the largest lumber companies west of the Mississippi River! On October 1, 1821, a group of Mormon pioneers journeyed from Nauvoo, Illinois to the Ozark Mountains in search of a new home. The party was led by Brigham Young and consisted of around 100 men, women and children. They were met with difficulties on their way and only made it as far as the town of Decatur before being forced to turn back due to harsh weather conditions. Inland, they encountered more difficulties travelling through rugged terrain and eventually reached the city of St. Louis on November 16th. After spending several weeks there, they departed for Independence County on December 3rd. On January 6th 1822, they arrived at the cabin which would be their final resting place.
