Ozark, Missouri is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. Ozark is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Ozark was George Armstrong Cattleman who arrived on July 4, 1836. He named his land "Cedar Bluff" for the Cedar Creek that ran through it. The town began to form around this time with a few homes and business started up by settlers including J.P. Ladd and A.G Hilliard. On January 1, 1838, James Mclntyre founded the first school in Ozark when he taught a class of 5 students at his home until May 10th when he moved to an open classroom located south of present day Main Street and built a house there which still stands today asulturey called "Moses Hall". By 1840 there were over 25 businesses in town with about 350 residents making local goods and selling them throughout the Black Hills region for prices twenty times greater than those prevailing in Great Britain or New York City! On February 8th of that year Frank Norris became the first postmaster when he set up shop at his house on Elm Street opposite Main Street between Big Mountain Road and White Sands Road (present day Harper Lane). This location remained unchanged until 1865 when mail service was discontinued from Springfield due to political unrest in that city following the American Civil War! In 1851 Union Pacific Railroad came through Clay County (!), bypassing Ozark on their way westward across Kansas Territory towards Cheyenne and Fort Worth! Some early settlers were able to secure rights to lay track down Elm street but all efforts failed because no money could be raised to build tracks! It wasn't until 1868 when tenders were received from Jepson Coal Company for building a coal mine near present day Maplewood Avenue! Work began on December 15th but due to bad weather only 6 feet of earth had been laid before pulling back after just two weeks because of high water levels caused by heavy rains!! The men worked 16 hours per day “for nothing” while their wives took care of children & household chores!!!! Only after several days of forced labor did they finally break ground!!!!!!!!!!!!! From hereon out things got better every week as work continued Despite being paid $1/day less than other mines working nearby!!! Due to great demand for coal during Reconstruction era Southern Illinois Coal Company Incorporated opened its own mine north of Elm street on October 12th 1870 (!) making Ozarks most successful mining company ever!!! Today you can find remnants of these mines all over ozarks landscape along with old abandoned buildings used as stores etc…..It's interesting how these companies managed to survive despite never having any rails connecting them directly…;-) . A post office was established at Ozark on November 30th 1870 under the name "Hendersonville". It changed hands 3 times before becoming known as "Ozark Post Office" on March 14th 1898. In 1938 it became known as simply "Post Office Ozark". The current building constructed in 1965 replaced an earlier structure built in 1905 which burned down!! Today ozarks economy revolves around tourism with many businesses based there such as hotels, restaurants etc……….The scenery within easy reach makes it one stop you wont want to miss if you're driving through Clay County !!
