Ozark, MO is a town located in the Ozarks of western Missouri. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO–IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Ozark" may be derived from O-Z-A-Rk which means Arkansas and Indian Chief (or his people) on the east side of theMissouri River. As early as 1837 an act was passed by Congress authorizing Major General Nathaniel Lyon to Surveys and set off military roads through this territory forts were built at Osage Hills on the north side of the river; these are now known as Ozark Forts. As time went on various towns were founded around Ozark including Gentryville, Carbondale, Bel Air and Florissant Springs. When Missouri became a state in 1821 it included all of what is now northwest Arkansas except for that portion lying south of I-70 between Travelers Rest and Fort Smith. This area was split off as a separate county called Anderson County in 1836 and named after James Klyde Anderson who had come toOKC from Kentucky in 1824 to take up land opportunity near Joplin, MO The principal industry in Ozark at present is agriculture with other interests being involved in manufacturing products such as shoes, automobiles and paper products. Mines have been active here since 1860 when gold was found near modern day Springfield One of Ozarks most wellknown residents is Forrest Gump who starred in one movie based on his life while another resident, comedian Dick Gregory also enjoyed success during his lifetime

Ozark is a town in Callaway County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Ozark was founded in 1837 by Captain John R. Hardesty and his family. It has been called "the Gateway to the Ozarks" because of its location on the Arkansas River and its access to timberlands. The Hardesty Home National Historical Park preserves archaeological evidence from the early 17th century settlers in Ozark. The first permanent settler in what is now Ozark was Capt John RHardesty and his family who came overland from Kentucky in 1837, following the Fayetteville-Springdale road we know today as State Route 506A (now US 65). The Hardestys were followed by others soon after, including David Cooks (1839), James Dooley (1841), John Hargrave (1843),and Samuel Morse (1845). By 1850 there were 10 families living here with 300 acres of land comprising present day Ozark Township. In 1857 Captain Martin Crawford established a post office at what is now known as North Side Road which served all of Callaway County except for Benton City which had its own Post Office since that time until it closed in 1907. In 1871 Dr JFD McCloskey organized a school District No 4 here and named it after himself – McLoskey School District #4 absorbed into Callaway County Public Schools on July 1, 1979. As new towns grew up around Osage Hills near Springfield during prohibition era they too became part of McLoskey School District #4 however their schools remained independent until this district's annexation into Callaway County PDHS on July 1st 1979 . As other parts of Missouri experienced black unrest beginning around 1920 examples can be found such as Poplar Bluff northwest flowing into Phelps counties line where residents burned down county courthouse during internal conflict; communities along I-55 such as Columbia also saw sporadic insurrectionary activity but no school burning or violence
