Ozark, Missouri is home to one of the oldest reloading and gunsmithing communities in the United States. The town was founded by George Armstrong Custer in 1871, and was renamed Ozark after its location on the Arkansas River. Ammunition History in Ozark The first ammunition used in American warfare was shot from cannons captured from Native Americans during the Mexican-American War. This type of ammunition was called "fatigue" powder because it caused a soldier's cannon to fire more rounds per minute than when using other types of ammunition. Fatigue powder was also used by European armies during World War I as well as World War II. During World War II, Ammunition manufacturers shifted to incendiary munitions which produced large amounts of heat when fired. As a result, both military and civilians began stockpiling incendiary munitions for use against Nazi Germany and Japan. In 1945, this stockpiling led to several accidents when incendiary munitions were mishandled by Allied Forces troops stationed within proximity of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings sites. In response to these accidents, Congress passed two acts known collectively as the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 1949. The act created new regulations governing how ammunition could be stored, transported, used, or disposed of and required all ammo suppliers who manufactured 500 or more rounds per day to register with Department Of Commerce officials. Ammunition dealers who did not comply with these regulations were subject to criminal penalties including up to five years imprisonment and a $250 fine per violation. After passage of this legislation, many companies merged or went bankrupt due to competition from government agencies seeking exclusive access to UMC's stockpile of incendiary munitions that had been amassed pursuantto NDAA regulations.. These later actions have resulted in an estimated 350 million rounds remaining unaccounted for throughout America today - approximately 60%of all original R&D data related thereto still remains scattered among various storage facilities across our land mass!
