Overland is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The first settlers in what would become Overland were three families who arrived in 1839 from Kentucky. The community was organized as a township on November 1, 1846 by order of the State Legislature. The name was changed to Overland on July 24, 1872 when it became part of Jackson County. In 1870, over fifty-five men and women came overland from Illinois to start a new settlement called "New Westminster" near present day Springfield. By 1880 there were only four residents living in New Westminster; all those who had come overland or had stayed overnight along the Oregon Trail. In 1902 the post office closed because of changes in postal service and New Westminster eventually lost its status as an incorporated town. The first school was built in 1865 by Mrs A W Bowden and named for her husband General David B Bowden, Colonel commanding United States Volunteers during the American Civil War (1863-65). It replaced an earlier cabin which burned down in 1861 while supplies were being stored for winter at Fort Donelson National Military Park northwest of Overland. That year also saw the opening of a general store run by J H Richardson across from where Interstate 40 now stands just east of town limits - this store would become one of Overland's most important commercial institutions until it closed its doors completely around 1978 when computerized ordering took over commerce throughout much of rural America. It wasn't until 1896 that a two-story frame school building with twenty classrooms and twelve staff members was built on land donated by local farmer Wm C Muhlenbergs; later renamed Stillwater School District #1 after he died in 1957 (his son still operates it today). Classes first started inside buildings erected across from Stillwater Baptist Church on Third Street before moving into their own building on Main Street between 1910 and 1912; finally connecting to current facilities within walking distance through an arterial road link about eight years ago when still another classroom/staff building became available on Park Avenue close to I-40 exit ramp just east of town limits - making Overlanders one of only few communities nationwide with both elementary and high school education options right off interstate highway access! One major event that marquised this era forOVERLAND occurred on September 15th 1946 when President Harry S Truman made his landmark speech announcing plans for atomic bombing raids against Japan during World War IIearing OVERLAND as potential targets due to its strategic location between St Louis and Kansas City - these raids didn’t take place but rather Hiroshima – 100 miles away! This event forever changed OVERLAND’s landscape as not only did locals learn about what their fellow citizens were experiencing overseas but also somerosstowners chose to move here specifically because OFERLAND offered them quality Of Life far different than back home where life continued pretty much exactly how it had been since pioneers settled HERE 640 YEARS AGO!

The Overland, Missouri community was founded in 1853 by John H. Overland and his wife, Sarah. The Overlanders were farmers who moved from Kentucky to the area that is now Overland in order to purchase land for a farm. They named their new community after the overland route of travel that connected Illinois with Missouri. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center for trade and commerce in the region. Overland was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad because many abolitionists used it as a safe haven during their journey to freedom. In 1859, the Overlanders donated land to build a school in honor of their son General David Hunter, Jr., who had fought in the American Civil War and helped win independence for Kansas. The General's School still stands today and is used as a museum today. In 1865, the Union army destroyed Overland's storehouse and all its property within radius of one hundred miles of Springfield, Missouri due to its support of slavery. This event is often known as the "Great Fire of Springfield." However, given that over time muchof Springfield's infrastructure was rebuilt anyway, this fire may not be considered quite so disastrous as it seems at first blush.
