The first store opened up in Byersville Road in 1865 by local farmer Wm J Heintzelman Jr.. By the end of that year, there were six stores open in Overland- four familyowned businesses and two mercantile stores run by friends or relatives of the owners. In 1868, P G Drexel bought a share of Heintzelman's store and began operating it as a general store on Main Street near what is now Highway 25A south of town. Another early shop owner was E F Bowers who started trading goods at his house on Byersville Road just east of present day US 60/57 intersection. A post office was established at Overland on July 1, 1870 under the name Ofen (later OV) after some residents donated land for the new station. In 1872 C M Stevens opened a flour mill which became ruins by 1925 but remains standing today as part of Old Mission Park off I-435 northcentral MO., home to numerous historical landmarks including Blanche Roberts Museum (formerly Mrs Roberts' House), Griggs Enterprise Coal Mine (now known as Mines Heritage Museum), Pioneer Cabin restaurant complex (now called Journey's Rest Bed & Breakfast), oldest hotel west of Memphis

Overland, Missouri is a small town in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 701 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Overland was founded in 1839 by John A. Overman and his wife Sarah Mayhew Overman as a place to raise four horses for the overland mail route from Springfield to Fort Lee in Virginia. The first store in what is now Overland was built on the corner of Second Street and Elm Street by Wm. H. Davies about 1830. In 1840, James Fenton opened a store next door and soon others followed suit until there were ten stores operating in Overland at its inception. By 1845, business had boomed thanks to the overland trade which brought goods from Illinois and Texas to market in Missouri. In 1870, John A.. Overman donated land near what is now Overland for a new township which would be named after him and his wife Sarah Mayhew Overman's daughter Harriet Beecher Stowe became its first official resident when she moved there from Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1872. The town continued growing with more businesses opening up until it had twenty-four businesses by 1900; five of those were banks or other financial institutions that remain important today such as First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) and Community Federal Credit Union (now Chase). In 1907, during World War Iemia overlanders working on maneuvers near Springfield came under fire from Confederate snipers while travelling through rural Warren County on horseback; many died including William Frey who lost an eye due to shrapnel damage years later while he rode into battle again as an Infantry officer commanding 7th Kansas Cavalry Regiment - one of only two Americans ever killed leading American troops during World War I . This event has been called "the shot heard 'round the world" because it galvanized support for the war effort among many citizens of America who saw combat first hand
