Overland is a small town in northeastern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1853 as a post office and railroad junction on the Overland Railroad. In 1892, it became a city and has since grown to become one of the most populous towns in Northeastern Missouri. Overland is noted for its annual corn festival, which draws thousands of people to the town for an agricultural event that includes music and crafts from local farmers. The festival also features carnivals, family fun days, and agricultural displays from local businesses. In 1861, Overland, Missouri was part of the Kansas Territory. In 1863, the Confederate States of America occupied Overland and began to operate a military garrison there. On July 8, 1864, Union General George Buell invaded the territory and overran the Confederate garrison. The garrison surrendered on July 9. The area became part of the Union occupation zone and soon after it was renamed Overland City. On November 15, 1868, Overland City became a city in its own right and is still an important cultural center in the region today.
