Overland, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by Captain John Overholt and his wife Mary Jane. Captain Overholt had been lost at sea while exploring the eastern Arkansas Territory and decided to settle in what is now Overland because of its good location for wagon roads. The first store opened in 1838, and over time many other businesses were opened including a hotel, bakery, blacksmith shop, grocery store, schoolhouse, and post office. In 1878 Overland received its charter from the Missouri General Assembly which allowed it to become an incorporated village. In 1902 Overland became one of three towns in Boone County when that county was formed from parts of Webster and Union counties. Today Overland is just a small farming community with some housing developments scattered around the outskirts of town. However, it still retains much of its original character including its independent banks (the First National Bank & Trust Company has been located here since 1907), pioneering Methodist Church (built in 1902), pioneer schools (grades Pre-K through 8 are located here), and early 20th century residents who continue to make their homes here today.

Overland, Missouri is a small town in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Overland is located on the edge of the Ozarks and can be seen as a transition zone between these mountains and the Low Country to its south. The first people to live in Overland were Native Americans who hunted game in what is now Warren County. In 1836, David Clayton founded an agricultural college in Overland calledDavid Clays University after his father-in-law's death. The college closed in 1892 but reopened as Topeka State Normal School in 1907 when Topeka became a state capital. After Topeka left Kansas for Oklahoma Territory in 1907, it continued to operate as a normal school until it merged with Wichita State University in 1945 to become Wichita State University–Topeka (WSU-T). WSU-T was renamed Wichita State University–Kansas City following statehood within Kansas in 1907. This made Overland one of only two university campuses (the other being Washburn Univ.–Chicago) that were not initially part of Wichita State University system; the other campus was Shawnee Nazarene Univ.–Lawrenceburg (now Shawnee Mission Community College).
