In 1916, Overland lost its status as a municipal city and became an unincorporated community within KCMO. Today, Overland is a small community located within KCMO's boundaries.
Overland is a town in Vernon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Overland were a party of five men and their families who arrived on July 4, 1836, from Carthage, Illinois. They named their new town after General George Washington's capital of Washington D.C., because they could not find any other towns with that name in the area. The original town plat was filed on November 16, 1836. The first store was built around 1840 by Amos Cook and it was the only one in Overland until 1850 when John Waddell opened his own store next door to Mr. Cook's business. In 1851 Mrs. Sarah Laughlin opened her own store which became known as "The Hitching Post". In 1865 George Clements established "Clements' Creamery" which became one of the prominent businesses in Overland for many years until it closed its doors in 1984 due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Don Sprague. In 1921 Jeraldine Sikes opened her convenience store (later renamed "Karen's") across from "The Hitching Post". That same year also saw the opening of the first post office in Overland; it remained open until 1978 when it was replaced by an internet café/mailbox combination business called "Mailboxes Unlimited". On October 3rd, 1926 Mayor Sprague proposed to Council that Overlanders be granted city status so that they could enjoy all the benefits that come with having municipal government including: better schools and more services available to residents; exemption from state taxes; zoning privileges for certain buildings including churches and businesses; streetlights within limits; fire prevention and emergency services free tuition at local colleges etc.. After much deliberation Council voted 6-1 against granting city status but did approve requests for a parkette (now known as Overlander Park) and better infrastructure such as sewers and streetscaping for the community center/library complex which would eventually become home to both stores adjacent to each other as well as several smaller homes situated between them on North Main Street (now First Avenue). This ordinance establishing cityhood gave overlanders some measure of local control but ultimately failed to win ratification from all members of Council so this ruling never had any practical impact beyond Goodyear Heights where City Hall still resides today despite being condemned by General Agnew in 1971 following an investigation into corruption within our government structure! TodayOverlanders remain proud participants within Vernon County through their mutual cooperation treaties withSpringfield Township (renamed Vernon Township since 2001), Searcy Township (established 1957), Hannibal Township (established 1912), White Sulphur Springs Township (established 1907) as well as numerous individual associations/ organizations such as Rotary Club #527 & American Legion Post #211
