During World War II (1939-1945), Overland served as an important munitions plant located just outside of town on Highway 506. Overland, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 971 at the 2010 census. Overland is known for its agriculture and cattle ranching industries, as well as its small-town atmosphere. The first person to settle in Overland was James W. Brown in 1836. He built a cabin on Prairie Creek and named it Brown's Ferry after himself and his father, James W. Brown Sr.. In 1838, another man by the name of Pryor moved to Overland from Illinois with his family. Pryor started a store called the trader on the east side of town. In 1846, John Prentice settled in Overland and began trading goods with traders from St. Louis and Nashville. He organized the first school in Overland in 1847 and named it Prentice Academy after himself and his son Revolver Prentice (1814-1892). At first there were just 10 students enrolled at Prentice Academy; however, within five years enrollment had increased to 100+. By 1860, over 50 businesses had been opened up around Overland including stores, hotels, churches, banks, blacksmiths/forge shops etc., which helped make the small town an important center for commerce during this time period throughout Missouri Valley region of America In 1861 Union troops burned down most of Pryor's store while he was inside; this event is often cited as one of the early examples of political correctnessUS history textbooks refer to as "the Great Fire of 1861". After this incident local business owners formed a Board of Trade to provide stability within their communities while they rebuilt their businesses In 1865 young James Ayer founded Ayer's Drug Store east of town which became one of the largest drugstores west of Kansas City In 1886 Albert binder founded binder Brewery on Main Street about two miles southeast from downtown OverLAND which became oneofthelargestbreweriesinMissouri Valleyregionofamericaduringthistimeperiod

Overland, Missouri is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was originally named "Prairie" and until 1872 it was located on prairies west of Springfield in what is now St. Francois County. The first settler in Overland was John O'Keefe who arrived in 1837. He had come from Illinois and owned some land near present day Independence and he called his land Prairie because the adjacent prairies were so fertile that corn could be grown there without irrigation. In 1838 John's son James O'Keefe sold his interest in Prairie to William Hogg for $1,000 cash plus 10 acres (40 hectares) of land east of present day Overland on which he built a home called "Hogan's Heights." In 1842 two brothers by the name of Richardson came to Overland and started a grocery store with twelve barrels of oil inside their building which became the first grocery store in Overland. They also raised chickens and pigs which they selling to local farmers for meat or eggs during this time period. The first post office established in Overland was called Prairie but it changed its name to Union City on July 20th, 1840 after being moved from Prairie to Union City by Daniel Boone when he donated land for a new post office thereon. In 1861 Union City disbanded due to lack of residents and so it reverted back to its original name of Prairie until 1865 when it again changed its name to Overland following an act by the General Assembly providing THAT overlanders should have their own post office - something that did not happen until 1870! In 1876 Ogden Chamberlain opened The Eagle eating house at 3rd & Main Streets where people would go for dinner before going into town for shopping or other activities; This restaurant remains open today as an operated business known as Chamberlain's Place! In 1886 Mrs Sarah Jenson opened her general store which continued operation until 1907 when she closed due to health problems; This store still stands today as one ofOVERLAND’s most popular tourist attractions! It wasn't until 1902 that a school began teaching children within the community - Samuel Moulton School #2! From 1902-1907 there were six schools operating withinOverland: three public schools (Samuel Moulton School #1-3), one private school (Mrs Sarah Jenson’s General Store), one parochial (St Francis Catholic School) and one rural elementary school (John Fenton Elementary). However all these schools shut down between 1907-1909 due to budget cuts made by then Superintendent George Hitchcock! In 1916 Driscoll High School opened up shoplifting candy from other stores while students were absent; This high school has since been demolished but portions remain standing behind Current Day Academy Street! Today overlanders enjoy many cultural activities including music festivals throughout the year along with golf tournaments held every few months; art shows held monthly at various galleries across town while genealogy societies meet every month too!! There are also several restaurants within our limits catering specifically towards overlander customers such as Hogan’s Heights Hotel & Grille, Old Courthouse Cafe & Bakery etcetera !! And finally we can always count on our annual “Festival Of Fun” taking place outdoors every August bringing together all sorts of families from all around town!!
