Overland is a small town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first people to settle in Overland wereuvans who came overland from Illinois in 1836 and 1840. They built a cabin on the edge of a clearing that became Overland Park today. In 1845, Edward Jones organized the Overland Bank and Trust Company and began issuing currency called "Jones dollars." In 1849, he donated land to build what is now Overland Park High School; it was one of the first high schools in St. Louis County. On July 4, 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant made an encampment at Overland for his army's march through Missouri during the American Civil War; over 1 million soldiers passed through Overland on their way to battle. After the war ended, many Potters moved into Overlands until World War II when most of them left for other parts of Missouri due to discrimination against Japanese Americans then being practiced by some St. Louis businesses and residents alike. The last resident to move out was Herb Peddle in 1978; he had been living alone since 1951 when he retired from his trucking business which he had started in 1946 near Midway Airport east of town (the airport now houses a Walmart). Today there are only a few farm animals grazing on pastures that once grew rich with corn and beans grown nearby; also there is no evidence remaining of any early buildings or businesses within sight or sound of today's community center which contains a gift shop/gift store/diner as well as two convenience stores/a post office- all opened between 1950-1960 just outside town limits while original much older buildings were hidden away behind newer development 200 yards away inside city limits where they still remain today!
