When the town of Overland, Missouri was founded in 1866, it was a small community of about ninety people. The population growth and development of the town throughout the years caused many new residents to move into Overland, some from as far away as Illinois and Iowa. One such resident was George Wicks, who arrived in Overland in 1865 and soon began developing a business partnership with his brother-in-law, James Hanks. In 1868, when Wicks married Eliza Jane Addams, he became one of the original incorporators of Overland. In 1870, over two hundred citizens voted to incorporateOverland into a city. During its early years as a city, Overland experienced heavy economic competition from nearby towns such as Independence and St. Joseph. Overland's growth continued during the 1850s with the arrival of more settlers and development of agriculture and ranching activities. The railroad arrived in 1868 and led to greater prosperity for Overland as businesses developed along its routes. Because it was an isolated community, Overlanders developed their own style of government which included a mayor/council system and a two-high school system. During World War II, Overlanders supported the United States military through various actions such as clothing rationing and donations to various causes. After the war, many members of the community moved away for various reasons but some remain active today including membership in local civic organizations and support for agricultural research initiatives within Missouri State University's Department of Agricultural Sciences

The community was founded in 1873 by farmers who drove a wagon train from California overland. Overland became a railroad town in the early 20th century and lost its importance after railroads left for other markets. However, it has regained some popularity as an outdoor recreation destination and holiday resort since being re-zoned for residential development in the 1970s.
Overland, Missouri was founded by the Overland Mail Company in 1855. The town was named after Governor Doniphan's overland route from St. Louis to Independence, MO. The company built a log cabin on the present site of Overland in 1857 and began trading with settlers along the Missouri River. In 1861, Overland became part of Union County when it was created from parts of Webster and Jefferson counties. In 1865, Confederate cavalry Colonel John Chilton attacked an unarmed white farmer named J.W. Perrin near Overland and killed him. This event is generally seen as the beginning of the end for Union County because it led to open warfare between local residents and Confederate troops until 1865.
