Overland, a Union general who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town was founded on the site of an old stagecoach stop called "Overland Station." In 1870, Overland became the county seat of Platte County. In 1904, Overland was renamed Independence because of its role as the capital of Missouri during the Kansas-Nebraska Act debates that took place there. On July 16, 1907, Overland became a city when it incorporated as a result of a vote by its citizens. Independence is now home to many small businesses and commercial buildings dating back to early Settlers days.
