Overland is a town in Shelby County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Overland was founded in 1839 by Nicholas Overstreet and his wife Elizabeth Canfield as a market town for traders on the Illinois River. The name originated from the land grant that Overstreet received from President James K. Polk in 1838. The town was first established on the east bank of the Illiessen River where a toll gate now stands. In 1840, Daniel Boone discovered timber near present-day Overland and began to sell logs to settlers on Long Island Sound for $5 per ton plus freight charges. By 1845, over 50 families had settled in Overland, including prominent citizens such as John Jumper and Elijah Whitehead. In 1850, Judge George Tilden dedicated two large blocks of land just north of downtown to create what would become Overland's central plaza or square; this block became known as "The Square." In 1861, when Missouri became a state, Overlanders voted to secede from Missouri and form their own government within Confederate Missouri Territory; this vote was not ratified by the Confederacy due to strong resistance from Unionists in other parts of Missouri. After Union troops burned down their community center during an attack on Confederate forces at Big Springs Battlefield in May 1863 (the Battle of Big Springs), most residents relocated away from Confederate territory or joined Union armies during the American Civil War (1861–65). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction efforts led by Governor Andrew Johnson (1865–68), many African Americans were brought back into white society through free labor programs; however, many local businesses remained closed due to discrimination against blackownership until World War II when race restrictions were lifted nationwide.[1] On November 3rd 1870,[2] General William Tecumseh Sherman's corps passed through Shelby County on its way southward along I-70 towards St Louis via Overland Boulevard; this event marked one of the most significant moments inOverlands history because it demonstrated Sherman's intent to conquer all of northwestern Missouri[3][4][5]. On July 8th 1871,[6] Representative Charles Wicker served lunch at Trimble House which later became home to First Baptist Church after it moved westward across McCullough Avenue from its original location on Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets.[7][8][9] moore county 4th street map
