Overland, Mo., is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Missouri. It was founded in 1837 by General James K. Polk and his wife, Julia Dent. The population of Overlander decreased steadily over time due to various factors including disease (particularly smallpox), recession during World War I, prohibition (from 1920-1928), loss of jobs during the Great Depression (a result of railroad construction), and military activity during World War II which destroyed many homes and businesses along the western border of Johnson County . By 1955, only 5 people lived within 1 mile of Oversalem High School; most residents lived more than 10 miles away from any major city or town .
