Overland, Missouri is home to some of the most unique ammunition history in the country. From firing projectiles from cannons and muskets to using surrogate rounds in target shooting, Overland has a rich ammo history that can be experienced today. Founded in 1868, Overland was one of the original towns in Johnson County. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who fought at Little Big Horn and Battle of Cedar Mountain. Today, Overland is a small community located just west of Springfield on Route 60. It is known for its historic buildings, including the oldest dry-fire artillery range in America and the only state-owned powder magazine west of the Mississippi River. In 1877, Overland became home to Missouri's first school system when it opened up shop with a few classrooms and several miles of track leading to an elementary schoolhouse downriver from town. The town continued to grow as businesses opened up and people began moving into the area for agriculture or mining operations. By 1907, Overland had over 100 residents and was considered one of the most important cities in Johnson County. During World War II, Overland served as an airfield for Army Air Forces training exercises over Central Missouri during 1942-1943 while also hosting military prisoner-of-war camps during that time period. After war ended, many people left Overland for other parts of Missouri but a select few stayed behind to continue doing business within their city limits which still exists today as part of Roundabout Inc., LLC., one of Jackson County’s largest private companies based out of Overton Park (just outside Springfield).
