In 1870, the Overland Mail Line Company was founded in Overland City by James K. Polk and his brother Edward H. Polk. The company operated a route from St. Louis to Independence, Missouri. In 1872, the company became the first railroad in Missouri to be chartered with a capital stock of $5 million. The Overland Railway was built between Concord, Illinois and Topeka, Kansas along the same route as the original Overland Mail Line Company. On July 8, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the new Union Station in Independence as part of his plan to improve transportation in Southeast Kansas and Missouri. The Overland Railroad merged with several other railroads in 1914 to become one of the largest companies in America.
