Nixa, Missouri is a town in Pike County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. In 1821, Nicholas Hargrave settled the area that now Nixa. He named it after his friend and business partner George Nixa. The first store in Nixa was built by George Nixa and opened on the corner of Third Street and Elm Street in 1824. In 1830, Andrew Jenson purchased the store from George Nixa and operated it until his death in 1867. Nixon's Mill was built about 1800 by John Nixon for grinding flour for local grocery stores in the area. It ceased operations around 1840 because of competition from more efficient mills elsewhere. A gristmill known as Nixon's Mill (now part of Truman State University) was built about 1850 by James Nixon and continued operation until 1861 when it was destroyed by a fire. The first post office called Nixa which opened on November 15, 1854 was moved to its current location on First Street in 1865 due to growing poverty within the community caused by low crop prices during the Civil War era. In 1871, Samuel Hargrave founded a foundry called Hargrave & Sons Iron Works located on Fourth Street between Main and Elm Streets.. This company produced cannons for Union forces during the American Civil War and also manufactured furniture including chairs for Union General Ulysses S Grant's home at Peoria Heights near Springfield, Illinois before he became President of America in 1865.. The mill closed down around 1915 but some parts are still extant today including an engine house used as a museum according to university officials.. After Samuel Hargrave's death his son-in-law Augustus Fenton took over management of the business which continued under family ownership until 1914 when it passed through inheritance to Myron Easley who sold it back to Augustus Fenton Jr., again becoming family owned until 1947 when it reverted back into public ownership with an operating agreement administered by Truman State University officials.. After numerous changes over time most notably becoming Truman State University's only graduate school (it began operation as Truman College in 1916), control eventually passed from Gatton Enterprises Incorporated (the original owners) to alumni trustees who operate it currently as an employee-only research institution focused on student life experiences climaxing with commencement ceremonies each year on May 6th .. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer's column passed through Nixa on its way to Fordyce Heights Battlefield where he was killed. The town was renamed Nixa after General Custer's death in 1885.
