Nixa, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It was founded in 1864 as a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. Nixa's location made it convenient for settlers to trade goods with the Indians and during the late 1800s, Nixa became known as one of the most important cotton growing towns in Missouri. In 1951, Nixa voters approved an ordinance that allowed handguns to be possessed within city limits without having to pass a firearms safety check. This ordinance helped make Nixa one of the first municipalities in Missouri to allow handgun possession by private citizens. The ordinance also provided for pistol permits and ammunition sales only to residents who could demonstrate an interest in hunting or target shooting. Nixa has seen its share of crime over the years, but thankfully no shootings have occurred since 2001 when two men were shot inside a local convenience store. In recent years, however, there have been several incidents where handguns have been used accidentally or illegally while people were either playing around with them or just didn't know they were there. As time goes on and more people move into town and begin using handguns for self-defense instead of solely for hunting or target shooting, it seems likely that gun cases will become more common here as well (although this cannot be guaranteed). He pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges, but was found guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 10 years.
Nixa, Mo., is a small town located in the Ozarks Mountains of southern Missouri. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Nixa is considered an agricultural community and has a strong corn and soybean economy. The first Europeans to visit what is now Nixa were French fur traders in the late 18th century. A post office was established in 1836, and the town was named for John Nixes, one of the fur traders. In 1839, construction began on what would become Nixa's first courthouse. The cornerstone for the building was laid by Gov. James Kiefer on Aug. 15, 1840. In 1865, General Order No. 10 prescribed that all public schools must have male physical education instructors from 8 p.m.–12 a.m., which caused some parents to object to their children being taught at night by women; however, local school board member Mrs. Crouse successfully lobbied for an amendment that required only female physical education instructors from 8 p.m.–10 p.m., which became law when it was ratified by the state legislature on Sept 5, 1865. On July 6, 1886, Jeptha Ladd published "Nixa: A Magazine of Historical Association" (later renamed " Midwest Historical Review") in Nixa while he served as editor of its predecessor "Missouri Pioneer". Three years later he moved to Topeka where he edited "Kansas historical magazine". Ladd died suddenly on Jan 24 1902 in Topeka after a long illness and was buried there with full military honors next to his compatriot Colonel Samuel Davenport who also died suddenly during his long illness in 1902 aged 63. In 1907 His widow donated his body to be reinterred at Elmwood Cemetery in Kansas City MO. In 1912 Missoulian photographer Julius Schwarzman took pictures of pioneer families living near present day Nixa before they moved out west. At least six Schwarzman family descendants still live near Nixa today.
