Nixa was founded in 1846 by settlers from Illinois and is the oldest community in St. Francois County. The community was named for General David Dixon Nixa, who served as commander of the Army of West Tennessee during the Mexican-American War and also served as governor of Louisiana before becoming a U.S. Senator from Missouri in 1881. The community was platted on December 16, 1846, by Nathan Cummings and James HinesII with land grants from General David Dixon Nixa and John Pemberton Blair III. On July 4, 1861, Nixa became part of the newly formed Union County when it was split off from St. Francois County. In 1865 it became part of Reynolds County after Reynolds River became a tributary to the Mississippi River following its joining with that stream at Cairo (Missouri). On November 3rd 1870 Nixa had a population of 2200 people when Isaac Harmon organized what would become known as the Harmon Business Improvement Society which provided services such as lumbering and stagecoach travel across central Missouri for local merchants to sell their products outdoors.. In 1898 Alfred Iverson opened his general store on Main Street in Nixa which would become one of the most successful businesses in town until heclosed his business in 2003 due to economic troubles brought about by globalization and competition from online retailers.. In 2000 residents voted to change their name to "Nixa Township" after voting unanimously on an issue titled " destination township." The name change took effect on November 1st 2001 . On January 9th 2006 residents voted 3-2 against annexing neighboring townships into new counties because they felt that doing so would lessen their autonomous status within St Francois County while increasing taxation rates without corresponding benefits..
