Nixa, Missouri is a small town located in Crawford County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Nixa was founded in 1858 by Nehemiah Nix and his wife Esther as a log cabin community on the banks of the Niobrara River. In 1862, Nixa became the capital of Crawford County when it was created from parts of Washington Township and Perry Township. The first post office in Nixa opened in 1863; it served as the county seat until 1868 when Kansas City became its replacement. The first school in Nixa was built on Second Street in 1864; it operated for one year before being closed due to lack of funding. A new school was constructed on Third Street in 1865 and operated for six years until it burned down in 1872. A new school was built on Fourth Street between 1868 and 1870 which continued to be used until 1903 when it burned down again. In 1902, a water tower was erected along Main Street which served as the town's water source until 1965 when an electric power plant replaced that facility. In 1909, $1 million were appropriated to build a dam across the Niobrara River to impound water resources necessary for growing cotton and other crops; that project failed to materialize because of financial difficulties caused by World War I.[2] In 1924, Nixa renamed itself after Eugene Vail who had been instrumental in helping develop Kansascity into one of America's leading cities during that era (he later served as mayor). A department store opened on Main Street successively from 1928 through 1954; all three stores were tears-down within five years due to fire dangers[3]. In 1962,[4] George Harkness donated land near Interstate 70 east of town for development into what would become known as "Harkness Prairie";[5][6][7] that land currently houses several businesses including Northrop Grumman Corporation's White Sands Missile Range.[8] In 1969,[9] Joe Frazier defeated Sonny Liston for the world heavyweight championship vacated by Muhammad Ali due to his refusal to fight him under controversial rules set forth by then-Governor Rosecrans;[10][11][12] Frazier's victory helped bring mixed martial arts mainstream attention within America[13], furthering popular interest in this sport throughout much of 1970s & 1980s - something which has recently been regained with some major events taking place at Harkness Prairie such as UFC 117 (now UFC 200) taking place there last month( August 17th), making it one stop you can't miss!

Nixa is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 539 as of the 2010 census. Nixa is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Nixa was John Sibley and his family in 1827. The town site was surveyed by George Stephenson in 1829 and named for him, although he did not actually live there until after the survey had been made. It has been said that Stephenson's namesake may have been General George Stephenson himself because of his role in designing and building the Underground Railroad's Central Station - another story suggests that Stephenson may have named the post office after one of hisproperties located near Petersburg, Virginia - anyhow, Nixa was founded on July 1, 1830. In 1833 a school was built which served children from both sides of the river. In 1840 an gristmill was built and continued to be used until 1907 when it stopped production due to damage caused by termites; however, it still remains standing today as a museum property with exhibits about local history. In 1865 an express wagon road (the Hannibal Road) ran through Nixa from Cairo to Springfield being filled with goods sent downriver for shipment upriver on boats; this route eventually became known as "The Gopher Trail". A large cotton gin operated here between 1901-1910s but ceased operations due to environmental concerns about its water quality; it is currently closed and does not appear to be haunted. A post office called Nixa was established at this location on November 16th, 1830 by Lorenzo Loomis; it remained open until May 6th, 1865 when it changed hands four times before closing permanently due to consolidation among several other towns in Clay County at that time under the name "Nixa". The present community of Nixa formed approximately three years later around a Methodist Church which had been erected on land donated by Mrs. Phebe Bigham (later widow of Major General Wm Hargrave). At first development consisted mostly of an isolated group of houses along Main Street west of Center Avenue; over time some larger homes were erected within walking distance or even across streets so that many people would come onto Main Street during their shopping errands without having to go out into town square where prices were high or where there might be danger from robbers or malicious men who might try to rob them if they were alone outside their house! In 1892 two stores opened: Mr. & Mrs Smith's general store on South Elm Street east side (now home also to IHOP) and Dillard's department store on East Center Avenue across from Mr. Smith's shop (now home also to KFC). These businesses combined totaled almost 50% ownership by women until 1978 when all women lost their share when male owners took over these businesses through mergers amd acquisitions throughout central Illinois! However Mrs Dillard still presides over her old stomping ground at 715 South Elm Street still making Believe cookies! By 1915 most residents had moved away leaving only a few elderly citizens left behind including Mrs Phebe Bigham who died in 1951 age 94 years! A new Post Office called “Nax” officially opened September 13th 1916 with Ethel Beaumont as First Clerk./ thenceforth Ms name changes back & forth thruout tenure while place always goesimenly spelled “Nx”
