They relocated to a farmstead two miles away and began to rebuild their lives as farmers. In 1865, Nixa became a station on the Nebraska Central Railroad. The railroad helped bring settlers to the area and during its construction, many stores and businesses opened up in Nixa. In 1870, Jens Aurbach started a sawmill in Nixa that continues today as one of the largest in the state of Missouri. Nixa experienced some significant growth during World War II when it became home to several military installations including Dowell Air Force Base and Fort Bliss Army Air Field. After the war ended, most of these facilities were closed down or converted into civilian use but Dowell AFB still remains operational today as an active USAF base with C-130J aircraft operations). Today, Nixa is known for its retail district called "The Village", which features a variety of shops and restaurants along Main Street; as well as its annual festival which takes place on Saturday in downtown Nixa from late October through early November each year.
