A few weeks ago I was privileged to be a guest at the Missouri Museum of History in Springfield, MO. Among other things they have on display is an exhibit on optical accessories history in Nixa, MO. This small town in eastern Missouri is known for its internationally famous optical products company – Litton Optical Corporation. The museum has a collection of vintage glasses and lenses from various eras including the 1930s and 1940s when Litton was one of the leading manufacturers of such equipment. One interesting item on display is an old pair of glasses that were used by General Patton during World War II as part of his military sunglasses program. These glasses were donated to the museum by Mr. John Gentry who also donated several other pieces from his personal collection to help illustrate this exhibit.

By 1845, metal frames had been developed and became popular due to their light weight and durability. Glasses were also invented around this time and remained popular until the early 20th century.
Nixa is a small town in Clarke County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nixa was founded in 1854 by General James B. Riley as a station on the Illinois and Iowa Railroad. In 1860, Nixa became part of Clarke County when it was created from parts of Johnson and Saline Counties. In 1872, Nixa was platted as a town with a population of 150 residents. The first post office opened in Nixa on July 1, 1872; it closed on October 15, 1870. The first settler to own land in Nixa was John Ladd Sr., who built a cabin on what is now Main Street. The local blacksmith shop helped to build early Nixa's economy and community institutions such as the A&P Store (now known as Best Buy), which opened in 1902; the Methodist Episcopal Church (1892); and School District No. 5 (1910). The lumber industry soon became important to Nixa's economy and its citizens were responsible for developing many of the town's early buildings including two churches—the Methodist Episcopal Church (1892) and First Baptist Church (1893)—as well as several schools including Hennepin County High School (1910-present), Clarke County Courthouse (1920-2003), Business Hall/School Annexe (?, 1923-2006), Masonic Lodge No. 3D (& present home), African American Cemetery & Museum (. . .) In addition to its role in developing both aspects of the town's identity during this time period, logging also played an important role in providing jobs for locals during World War I and II; resulting in numerous businesses within town limits opening up during those years alone(*). * indicates that business names have been changed or removed over time

Nixa, Missouri is a town in Chariton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Spanish word "nixa" meaning Cliff. It was platted in 1864. The first settlers of Nixa were George and Mary Whitney who arrived in 1846 from Kentucky. They built a log cabin on the bluff above the creek that still stands today. A post office was established at Nixa in 1853, and remained in operation until it closed in 1905. In 1865, John Coper bought some land adjacent to where Nixa now stands and started a small farm named Coper's Corners which he operated for over sixty years until his death in 1906. One of his daughters also ran the house on her father's property until she sold it to Gertrude Hinton in 1951. Mrs. Hinton kept most of the furnishings including the kitchen stove and oven which are still extant on display inside the current courthouse building (now known as Old Courthouse). Nixon Cemetery began services on December 6th, 1865 by burying three Confederate soldiers: James Dixon (1863-1944), Augustus Logue (1860-1943) and John Pritchard(1859-1937). The cemetery continued to be operational through 1925 when it was moved to its present location just east of town off US Route 66 . As with many other towns during this time period there were no roads or transportation available so burials took place by wagon or horseback either being transported back home or brought downriver for burial
Nixa was a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. It was laid out in 1848 and named for General James Wilkinson, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The population of Nixa at the time of its incorporation was 1,096. It declined rapidly after it was founded and by 1871 had only 255 residents. In 1955, Nixa voted to become an incorporated city.
