The history of Nixa began with two families who decided to settle in the area. The first settlers were Levi and Sarah Purdy, who arrived in 1871. They built their home on the east side of town and started a small farm which they continued to operate until 1880. After 1840s when slavery was abolished in Missouri, many farmers started moving into central Missouri from Kentucky and Tennessee because of new opportunities for labor available there. In 1871, Levi Purdy's brother David moved from Louisville, Kentucky to start a farm about three miles north of Nixa on what is now State Highway 522. This land had been owned by John Dickey since it was surveyed in 1792. David Purdy’s farm grew rapidly due to his good management skills and he soon became successful; he purchased additional land near Nixa and established himself as one of the leading landowners in central Missouri. He also hired people from Indiana to help him cultivate his crops which led to increased profits for him and his family members. In 1881, David Purdy married Julia Atherton (1848-1927), daughter of General James Atherton (1796-1863). She was an excellent mother and contributed greatly to her husband’s success both socially and economically. Together they raised five children: Mary Fannie (born 1883), Nathanial J., IV (born 1886), David Leslie (1889-1966), Alfred Everett (1893-1971) It was during this time that David Purdy began developing what would become his famous fruit trees; these apples were grown specifically for cider production which became very popular in early 20th century America . In 1922 he donated over 1 acre () worth of his fruit trees to be used by Central High School students as part of their curriculum; this program continues today . In 1927, when David died suddenly at the age Of 80 years old , Julia took over running their business until her death in 1933 . Her son Nathanial Jr.(1915-) continued operations until 1978 when he too passed away leaving wife Mary Alice Ketcham(1921-) operational control & marketing functions through daughter Julie Ann Ketcham(1975-) currently CEO/Operator
