Nixa, Missouri is a small town in Harrison County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Nixa is part of the St. Louis Metro area. It was named after General Simon Nixa, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Missouri. The first settler in what is now Nixa was John Capps who arrived on July 12, 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on a knoll overlooking the present day town square. Today there are several remaining pioneer homes from that time including Capps Cabin #2 which still stands today and has been restored to its original condition by volunteers as part of the Antique Village Museum project located adjacent to it. In 1839, James Fenton moved to Nixa from Florissant and founded what would become known as Fenton's Mills which soon became one of the most important cotton mills in Missouri. In 1853 Colonel George Armstrong began construction on what would become Armstrong's Storehouse which remains standing today as one of only two grocery stores left standing in Nixa after it burned down in 1984; it replaced an earlier store structure that had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. Nixon High School opened in 1961 and currently serves as the primary school for Harrison County residents with students from neighboring towns also attending Nixon High School during special occasions such as graduation or other events not related to general classification school districts within Harrison County (e.g., musical concerts). A new high school building will be completed next year bringing Nixa's enrollment up to 2,000 students for grades 9 through 12 Cyclone Joe Coleman Elementary/ Middle School will open fall 2020 following some construction projects funded through local taxes levied against businesses located within walking distance of both schools - this project represents another major investment for economic development initiatives brought about by Mayor Jeremy Becker Greenlaw’s administration since coming into office in 2018!
