Nixa, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 2,554 as of the 2010 census. Nixa is part of the Jackson County seat and has a Post Office that was established in 1868. The town began as a1 wagon stop on the Illinois-Missouri Railroad near present day Nixa. In 1879, J.D. Worley founded Worley's Furniture Store which became one of the most important stores in town for many years. In 1902, Mr. Worley built what is known locally as "The White House" which still stands today and serves as a restaurant and gift shop. Some of the other early businesses in Nixa were the Depot Hotel (1892), Mrs Teller's Bakery (1901), Lula Ford's Grocery & Clothing Emporium (1910), and Mrs Purdy's Pony Shop (1914). Nixa experienced its first post office fire in 1916 when mail was destroyed by flames from an over burning building during summer heat waves caused by drought conditions at that time in Southern Missouri. In 1984, Nixa voters passed an ordinance designating their downtown area as an open-air museum to promote tourism within the community while also preserving some original buildings from development over time including The White House which had been threatened with demolition many times but always remained standing; however, it ultimately failed to gain city funding to preserve it despite widespread public support through petitions and rallies throughout much of 1986 until finally being funded with private donations after more than three decades effort by several citizens made contact with City Manager Tim O'Malley who then spearheaded fundraising efforts culminating with successfully obtaining preliminary zoning approvals from city officials on November 3rd, 1987 making The White House an official museum property dedicated to history and preservation

The community was founded by refugees from the American Civil War, who were displaced by the war's violence and destruction. In 1881, Nixa became part of the newly formed county of Boone County. The town has been growing steadily since then, becoming known for its agriculture and manufacturing industries. Today, Nixa is a vibrant community with a strong cultural heritage and thriving economy. The origins of Nixa are unclear but it is likely that it was named for General John Custer's military unit called "Nixes," which fought in the American Civil War. The most interesting fact about this unit is that they never actually numbered more than 20 men – only 8 participated in battle! Despite their small number of combatants, these men "made an impact" on the war effort as they were able to pioneer new battlefield tactics and strategies. After the war ended, many of these veterans returned home and began rebuilding what had been lost – including Nixa. In 1836, several hundred refugees from the American Civil War settled in what is now Nixa. This group was significant because they were largely composed of veterans who had experienced combat during the conflict. They arrived at what is now Nixa Landing on April 12th, 1836 after fleeing Union forces near Cairo, Illinois (). Over time, this group slowly assimilated into local society while working towards creating a new life for themselves within their new surroundings (). The following year saw another influx of refugees when Arkansas seceded from America due to disagreements over slavery (and subsequent racial tensions). These newcomers also came directly from southern states such as Virginia (), Kentucky (), Tennessee () and North Carolina (). All of these arrivals put their trust in God as they attempted to find a new home for themselves (). Although some residents initially welcomed these newcomers with open arms (), attitudes quickly changed once reality set in that many people had experience living under Confederate rule (). Many soldiers from Arkansas' volunteer militias also made their way to Nixa after returning home (); these men helped contribute significantly to early economic development hereabouts (). Nixa was founded in 1868 by John A. Nix and his wife, Anna. The town was named after the Missouri River, which flows through it. In 1870, the family started a grocery store in Nixa. The store prospered until 1901 when it burned down. In 1907, the Nixas bought a farm on the edge of town and began growing corn, beans, and potatoes. They also raised chickens and pigs. In 1927, they built a two-story house to sell their produce from their farm. The house still stands today and is used as a museum
