Nixa is named after a small stream that flows through the community. The first settler to arrive in what is now Nixa was Wilhelm Kühneman in 1892. In 1907, Nixa became part of the city of Kansas City and was annexed into it. The population of Nixa grew steadily over the years until it reached its peak in 1951 when there were 1,500 residents living in the community. However, by 1970, the population had declined to 600 residents and by 2000 only had 60 residents remaining. Today, most of the town has been demolished and there are still some remnants of it present withinKansasCity proper. The early history of Nixa can be traced back to 1892 when Wilhelm Kühneman arrived in what is now Nixa from Germany with his family. He set up a farm near what is now downtown Kansas City and began trading goods he manufactured from his land for goods sold by local merchants. Over time, other farmers followed suit and started farming around what is now central Kansas City. By 1906, there were 10 settlers living in Nixa and they started construction on a log cabin which served as their home for several years before being replaced with a more permanent structure built out of wood and earth block plates that would later become known as “The White House”. The first businesses established withinNixa were an oven shop run by Mrs.(unknown)and two stores operated by Mr.(unknown). In 1916-17, an express wagon train carrying wheat stopped at what is now where Independence Mall currently stands; however, no one disembarked because World War I prevented any food from reaching America at that time! This event marked the beginning of heavy German settlement withinKansasCity due to their need for food during wartime shortagesIn 1927-28*, another express wagon train carrying flour stopped at (now)Wabash Avenue; however this time many people disembarked due to economic hardship caused by stock market crashes throughout America In 1930-31* another express wagon train carrying coal stopped at (now)Taylor Street; however again few people disembarked because there were no roads available at that time* By 1951 both stores had closed down due to lack of customers* which left Wilhelm Kühneman with just his farmstead * Which he continued running until his death in 1957.* subsequent owners lost interest in continuing operations after this point so much so that all traces ofthe original village have disappeared* although some evidence remains such as fieldstones found near current day Wabash Ave.*original German name for villagewas “Niederausch” or “New Settlement” Today it may be hard to identify many aspectsof pioneer life such as grocery store ownership or daily routines since these records have not survived intact* nonetheless visitors can enjoy walkingthrough old storefronts or taking toursof Wilhelm Kühnemenands original farmstead today if they are interestedIn learning more about this interesting part oflocal history please check out our website: nxasaonline dot org

After a decline in the population, Nixa lost its status as an incorporated city and eventually fell out of touch with the larger community.
