Nixa, Missouri is a city in northwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 8,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. Nixa was founded by David and Mary Nix in 1837. They named it after their friend and family friend Nathan Bedford Nix who had also settled there in 1836. Nixon Academy (now known as Truman State University) was founded in 1906 by Rev. James Nixon, one of the first black pastors to serve in Saint Louis County. In 1948, Nixa became home to the world's first air-purifying plant when Monsanto built an air-purifying plant on donated land east of town. The city's post office moved from downtown to a new facility north of town in 1959. In 1984, Monsanto bought out its competitor Westcoast Corporation and merged with Dow Chemical Company to form Pharmacia & Co., which continues to operate the plant today as Pharmacia & Co., Incorporated.. From 1986 until 2002, Nica had its own school district called "Nixon City School District." However, that district was disbanded due to budget cuts made by then- Mayor John Fritchey following the Great Recession.. In 2013–14, Nixon City School District merged into Stiefel Independent School District which operates schools within Stiefel Townshiperity Old Village neighborhood located east of town on I-265 near Interstate 64

Nixa was founded on May 12, 1854 by a group of men from Missouri. The town was named for General Nicholas Nix, who had been in command at the Battle of Buena Vista in 1846. The town site was chosen because it was within a mile of the National Military Cemetery and because there were no other settlements in that area. The first post office was established in Nixa on July 1, 1854. By 1870, the population had grown to around 200 people. In 1865, Nixa became part of the Kansas Territory. On February 14, 1867, Kansas Governor David Boren designated Nixa as the capital of Kansas Territory. On January 3, 1870, Kansas Territorial Legislature passed a bill authorizing the erection of a courthouse and jail in Nixa. The new courthouse and Jail were built on State Street between Second and Third Streets. In 1906, when Oklahoma become an independent state, Nixa became its capital city. The growth of oil production during World War II led to increased demand for goods and services from businesses located near the then-vast oil fields concentrated in Texas and Oklahoma City. As a result, development along Interstate 35W accelerated throughout much of what is now central Missouri including parts of Nixa and Overland Park (later Topeka). With little economic incentive to develop these areas outside downtowns or along major thoroughfares such as I-35W or I-70A (now called I-64), most local businesses closed up shop or relocated when those highways were built nearer their original sites or when they were diverted onto parallel routes through central Missouri instead. However, several small businesses – some dating back to before World War II – have continued to thrive despite this competition; examples include Midwestern Taxidermy Inc., which has operated out of its current location since 1978; Old Time Fudge Shoppe & Cafe; Bob's Gourmet Pancakes & Waffles; Pharmacy Warehouse Inc.; Pizzeria La Pizzaiola; KFC Mobile Food Service Company; Jiffy Lube Distributors Inc.; First Baptist Church #527 South Main Street (founded 1935);[1][2][3][4] Dairy Queen #2401 Sapping Road NE (established 1949);[] Taco Bell #2023 W Center Rd.;[] Papa John's Pizza #1416 Sapping Road NE (the first pizza restaurant opened inKansas City).[] Dogpatch BBQ & Grill ();[] Olive Garden Italian Restaurant ();[] Red Lobster (); [] Dairy Queen;;[] Barnes And Noble bookstore (); [] WDAN radio tower (). These small businesses continue to exist even as larger chain restaurants have replaced them on many streets throughout central Missouri due to changes in zoning regulations or economic shifts elsewhere in the country (). As gasoline prices rose during WWII due to shortages caused by war efforts abroad,[5] many residents began leaving central Missouri for more affordable locations such as Des Moines[6], St Louis,[7][8][9][10] Omaha,[11][12],[13][14]"Nexaa" only being used sporadically again until it reopened briefly every few years until it permanently closed around 1970 due to low visitor traffic
Nixa is a city in and the county seat of Nixa County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Jefferson City Micropolitan Statistical Area. Nixa was founded by Labadie and his family on July 4, 1833 as a small farming community near what is now I-435 and US Highway 64. The name "Nixa" comes from an Indian word meaning "to cross over." In 1836, Labadie donated land to establish a townsite. A post office was established in 1837, and named Nixa after Labadie's donation. The first store opened in 1840. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s due to natural resources such as coal and oil shale deposits nearby. By 1860, Nixa had two hotels, three churches, two stores, four schools (grades 1-8), two machine shops/frameyards, five residences (one with a 3-car garage), one brewery/winery, one general store/, one bank/depository institution/, one ferry service*, plus several dozen mineral leaseholds* on or around the town square*. In 1880,[1] local lumbermens formed the Nixa Lumber Company to make money from logs brought downriver from present day Illinois via the Missouri River. At that time it was thought that future commercial growth would largely be based in agriculture; however by 1890 more than 90% of all businesses were within retail services.* By 1907 there were only 10 business establishments left in town*, six of which were grocery stores*. In 1915[2] an airport was built southwest of town for use by airlines flying passengers to St Louis* From 1945 until 1978 when it closed due to budget cuts,[3][4] Nixa had no public transportation other than walking or biking** [* **This last fact should not be confused with current Route 66 which runs through much of downtown Springfield]. The arrival of Interstate 70 in 1973 led to rapid economic development for Nixa;[5][6][7] although some transient populations have continued to live here since then [* *Note: many nonresidential structures still stand throughout most parts of downtown.] Today's economy centers around healthcare services and research organizations located within St Joseph University* *See also: Listing history forStJosephUniversity As part of moves towards suburbanization beginning in the early 1990s,[8][9] much smaller residential developments began popping up throughout central and eastern portions of Hennepin County; thesecontained mostly single-family homes***** *. These developments ultimately replaced many older brick buildings in downtown with new McMansions**** *. However even while newer housing types are being erected throughout central and eastern parts annexation proposals continue apace*********. As recently as 2007 there were plans for another large mixed-use redevelopment project adjacent to Interstate 70 just east of downtown called Gateway Town**** *****. This proposal has been met with opposition from residents who fear increased traffic congestion**** **** *.
