Nixa, Missouri is a small town in northwestern Missouri. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County. The community was founded in 1871 by settlers from Illinois and Wisconsin. Nixa was named for George Washington Nix, an American politician who served as secretary of state under Ulysses S. Grant and as a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference in 1898. Nixa became a coal-mining center during the late 19th century. Coal mining ceased after World War II, but fishing and hunting have been important industries in the area since then. Nixa is located at (36.966904, -95.560959). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,811 people, 693 households, and 474 families residing in the town. The population density was 917 people per square mile (335/km²). There were 723 housing units at an average density of 347 per square mile (135/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races

Nixa, Missouri is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nixa was founded in 1871 and named for General James A. Nixa who fought with Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. In 1868, Daniel Boone settled in what is now Nixa after crossing the Arkansas River into Johnson County from Illinois.[1] In 1871, General James A. Nixa made his first trip to this area when he led an expedition to Clearwater Creek where he Surveys land for a railroad which would come through this area in 1872. The town of Nixa was founded on July 4th, 1871 by JB Hunt and P McDowell under the name "New Logging Camp". The post office operated from 1870-1876 under the name "Indianola".[2] In 1901, an oil well was discovered in what is now downtown Nixa and soon afterward local businesses started up to capitalize on this new industry; including stores such as D’Angelo's grocery store and Pioneer Hardware Company which still operates today as one of downtown's main arteries. However it wasn't until 1907 that a movie theater opened up in downtown called the Masonic Temple with seating for 100 people inside and out on a covered porch[3]. This pioneering cinema would continue operating until 1956 thanks to donations by Mayor John Wirthman (1917-1978) and his wife Idelle Wirthman (1920-2007). In 1914 there were also two hospitals set up near each other - Driscoll Hospital & Clinic or DRH&Clinic as it came to be known - both providing health care services for civilians during World War I while also housing military personnel injured or wounded during that conflict[4]. During Prohibition times Brewington Brewery produced some of St Louis' most famous brands such as White Claw whisky and Blue Ribbon beer although all operations ceased around 1933 due to government regulation prohibiting alcoholic sales at stand level across America[5]. However even before prohibition ended nightlife had already begun at large venues like Ebbets Field located east of town on State Route 125 where jugglers entertained crowds 24/7 between 1865-1920[6], municipal wrestling matches were held at Municipal Hall nightly from 1909-1977,[7] country music concerts were frequently staged at rural fairgrounds throughout Johnson County throughout much of the 1920s,[8] pro football games were often played outdoors on oversize rugs called "football diamond" locations dotted around central cities like Springfield throughout much of that era culminating with Orson Scott Carden playing one pregame show at Municipal Stadium on October 8th 1984 headlined by Joe Bonamassa
Nixa was founded in 1836 by a group of men who struck out from Hannibal, Missouri. The town quickly became a hub for the region, and by 1840 it had become the largest settlement in what is now Missouri. In 1847, Nixa became the county seat of Crawford County, and the population grew rapidly as farmers moved into the area to graze their livestock. In 1870, Nixa was renamed after General Andrew Johnson, who served as president during Reconstruction in Missouri. The town continued to grow and grow until it reached its peak in 1919 when it had a population of around 12,000 people. By then, however, Nixa had lost much of its importance due to technological advances and suburbanization that took place within miles of the town. Today, there are only a few buildings remaining from Nixa's heyday; most notably the courthouse which still stands today.
