Nixa, Missouri is a town in and the county seat of Jennings County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,468 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1857. Nixa is located on the confluence of the White River and Arkansas River. The name "Nixa" means "old fort." The first permanent settlers in what is now Nixa were a group of Methodist missionaries who came to this area in 1857. They named their new settlement after one of their own: John Nixa, Sr., a wealthy planter from Tennessee who had donated land for the facility. In 1870, an act of Congress designated Jennings County as the location for both Nixa and nearby Arkadelphia as county seats because they were two small towns with few residents and no infrastructure available to support them. The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on two major rivers and its access to wagon roads that led into faraway destinations such as St Louis or Kansas City. By 1900, Nixa had over 1,000 residents and boasted several businesses including a bank, grocery store, doctor's office (later renamed Knights Hospitals), post office (opened in 1893), blacksmith shop/ forge/, livery stable/cart barn/, schoolhouse/, Baptist church (opened 1865), bath house (), coal mine (), tennis court (), movie theater () and numerous other structures designed by local architects or built by local labor gangs under contract from outside companies such as George Stephenson & Sons Incorporated (the builders of many early American cities) or PrenticeHall (). Lack of money also contributed to rapid development; many buildings were constructed without any foundation until they collapsed due to natural disasters like floods or earthquakes which frequently struck Jennings County at that time. As people lost interest in living near waterfalls or rich soil resources – instead looking for more prosperous opportunities within commuting distance – many businesses closed up shop around 1920s-1930s when transportation became easier to find elsewhere in larger cities like St Louis or Kansas City while prices for goods increased significantly en route home from those larger markets. Despite these challenges over time, some members of the community kept healthy traditions going such as apple pie baking contests every Thanksgiving morning since 1903 while others formed civic organizations like Rotary International which helps maintain social order throughout our town during peacetime; even today there are occasional Independence Day picnics outdoors featuring all age groups free from weed smoking prohibitions! Wimberly and his wife Lucy as a Mormon Settlement on the banks of the White River. It received its present name from General Nathan Bedford Forrest during the American Civil War. Nixa is located at (38.626269,-95.566667). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,574 people, 527 households, and 471 families residing in the town. The population density was 381 people per square mile (147/km²). There were 605 housing units at an average density of 159 per square mile (61/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population
