On December 14, 1871, it became a part of Clay County. The courthouse was built in 1872 and replaced an earlier structure that burned down in 1865. Nixa has two schools: One public and one private. Nixa High School graduated its first class of seniors in 2007 and the first class of juniors in 2009. In addition to high school, Nixa also has a Junior College which opened in fall 2009 and offers credits towards a degree from Northern Illinois University Carbondale or the University of Missouri Columbia. The mayor is elected by popular vote; however the current mayor is Jeff Pappas who took office on January 1st, 2018 after winning an election against incumbent Tom Hickey
