This event is also often cited as being when Nixa lost its importance as a commercial center due to other nearby towns becoming more important financial hubs AfterKansas joinedthe United States in 1896 (following passage of the Nationality Act by Ulysses S Grant), nearly all businesses within town closedtered or moved away due to low economic opportunities (). However, some locals decided to reopen some old stores and reopened them under different names throughout the early 1900s During World War II (), although lumber production ceased entirely due to rationing (), many workers chose to build military barracks nearby () which led to increased civilian development around these facilities ().
