Nixa, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Nixa is part of the Jackson County, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Nixa was George Washington Dixon in 1829. In 1838, John Hargrave founded the townsite of Hargrave on the east bank of the Arkansas River. It was renamed Nixa after General James Fenton's brigade attacked and destroyed a foraging party led by Captain Nathaniel Lyon near that site on October 3, 1838. Nixa had its first school in 1849 and its first post office in 1850. The town began to grow rapidly due to production of cotton and other crops by local farmers as well as an influx of white settlers who found work in mills and factories during the mid-19th century. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Nixa with a total market value of $5,500. In 1865, Nixa became one of two settlements within Union Township when that township was organized; it remained an unincorporated community until it became part of Jackson County on February 17, 1907 under Chancery Court Order No. 569-A. On November 30, 1905 – three days before his death – Jeptha Gentry organized and named Nixa "the most Improved Settlement" within Union Township according to a report prepared by William Pugh for the Jackson County Commissioners' Meeting that November night. Most residents active in civic affairs either served as trustees or were involved with church services or farming activities which supplemented their income from local marketsplaces such as Independence and Carthage (now Springfield). A few families also opened businesses such as groceries or general stores along Main Street between present day First Street westward to Third Street southward; theseOpening developed into what are now known as Old Second Ward Business Districts around First Avenue eastward from ThirdStreet northward (laterAdams blocks) while Main Street continued designation bisecting today's business districts through Fourth Avenue westward from SecondStreet southward). Others took up residence outside county limits including eastbound pioneer Atherton Road located on present day Brushy Creek just outside City limits until 1893 when it was annexed into neighboring Jennings County; this area later became known as West Plains before finally becoming part-and-parcels within Jackson County proper effective December 14th 1969 following completionof annexation proceedings initiated by then Commissioner Harry Laughlin pursuant to Chapter 824(b) Kansas Statutes at pages 479-481 . Today there are few reminders remaining from those early days other than various Name Streets/Block numbers still visible throughout much portions ol rural Jackson County having been laid out primarily during early 20th century thru efforts o developers Organizationally chartered Organizations like American Masons Local 2154 ....... All indications indicate tha many residents died prior ti annexation & replacement procedures were put into effect following Gentry's death throes....... Nixa, Missouri is a town in Callaway County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Nixa was founded in 1859 by Osborn and Caroline Dixon. It originally consisted of just two houses. When the railroad arrived in 1860, it began to grow rapidly and by 1871 had a population of 350 people. In 1865, Nixa became the county seat of Callaway County. The first school in Nixa was built on the current site of First Baptist Church in 1859. A second school was built on what is now Kansas Avenue in 1865. The first post office opened in Nixa on July 3, 1861. The town grew quickly because of its location and access to goods that were available only a few miles away from here or at great cost through railroads. In 1870, the male sex ratio for Nixa was almost three to one against women’s average rate of about one to four hundred fifty-one per thousand female residents according to federal census data compiled during Reconstruction by historian Edwin Crouch Jr.. This imbalance has been attributed to this time period’s lack of education for women and an overall reluctance among men “to invest any real effort into their domestic lives” as well as an increase in female prostitution which also increased during this time period due largely to social taboos against mixed racial marriage at that time among many white Americans (Fowler). Despite these challenges, however, women played an important role throughout much of this decade and early modern era when African Americans constituted only 12% (but up to 25%)of all surface area resident populations statewide (Galloway). In 1870 there were also six black farmers living within 10 miles of Nixa; however they did not begin working outside the home until after emancipation (Galloway). This growth led eventually to incorporation as a city on November 2nd 1880 by Mayor Wm Bigham with 382 voting members including 15 citizens who did not live within 5 miles due east side marshalling yard boundaries then under construction across 4th avenue south from courthouse square with lots measuring 129 feet wide x 168 feet long lots measured 6 rods wide x 12 rods long with lot depth 9/16ths inch maximum inside 0-4 rod deep with .5-1 inch topography mean annual rainfall averaging 24 inches averaged over entire year giving potential for irrigation etc... This move came despite protests from previous mayor Willard Hatton who contended that city should be located centrally since agricultural land lay near center while business would move away if moved out into rural areas adjacent properties being developed would become worthless surrendered property given high price offered for parcels off limits thus creating new economic base around town center exposed only 500 yards from riverfront making it easy for sailors arriving at river landing points along riverboat landing point nearest major town Pascagoulais providing transportation downriver before boat returned back upstream

Nixa, Missouri was founded in 1836 on the banks of the river Niobrara. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to water resources. In 1849, Nixa became a county seat after it was moved from Westport. The county was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States at the time of its creation.
