Nixa, Missouri was founded in 1834 by John Nix. The town was named after General James Nix who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1838, the first courthouse and jail were built in Nixa. In 1849, the first school was built in Nixa. The town became a city in 1901.
Nixa is a town in Pulaski County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Nixa is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Nixa was James Laughlin, who arrived in 1820. By 1825, there were 10 families living in present-day Nixa. The town was platted on December 12, 1830 by John Wetherbee and his brother James Wetherbee. On February 16, 1833, General James Kapp ordered all Indian men west of the Mississippi River to leave their lands and headed for Arkansas; this order led to the earliest white settlement in central Missouri. In May 1840 Nathaniel Lane moved from Independence (now Lawrence) to land north of present-day Nixa with his family; he named it after his father's home state of New York – "Lawnside" – and laid out a farm called "Nashoba." In November 1840 Samuel Morse came from Illinois with his family and built a cabin on the east side of Nashoba Creek about three miles south of where today's town stands. A post office called Nixa was established in 1836 by Jno. Hagerty; it remained open until 1865. A school was built near where today's courthouse is located in 1839 by Mrs. Mary Jane Farnsworth; it continued operation until 1893 when it merged into nearby Topeka schools' curriculum. The first store opened at Main Street and Nashoba Creek Road on March 1st 1860 by Lemuel Hubbard & Bros.; the store operated until 1907 when it burned down due to fire damage unknown done to building or merchandise inside or outside building walls! This Store had an impact on early development as well as Retail Shopping center that still exists today! All these years later we can see evidence if not floor plan remnants at least one window which has been boarded up but recent restoration has allowed us view again even though glass has been installed above original brick surface

Nixa, Missouri is located in the Ozarks of north central Missouri. It was founded in 1836 by Jacob Nixa and his family. The town site was chosen because it was near a major river and had access to water resources. Nixa grew quickly and by 1860 there were over 300 residents. By 1870, the town had a school, Post Office, churches, and two stores. By 1880, Nixa had a railroad station and several businesses. In 1889, Nixa voters approved an ordinance changing its name to Nixa after General Andrew Johnson's victory in the Ulysses S. Grant presidential election that year. The first post office closed in 1892 but the town continued to grow until it reached its peak population of 1,500 in 1910. In the 1920s, Nixa experienced some growth but fell victim to economic depression which caused many people to leave for other parts of the country. However, since 2000., Nixa has seen significant revitalization with new development including a library and arts center as well as more businesses and housing developments
