Nixa, Missouri is a small town located in Osage County, Missouri. The population was 541 at the 2010 census. Nixa is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Nixa were French traders in 1677. They called it "New Orleans", and because of this name the town became known as New Orleans Landing during the early years of its existence. When the United States acquired land south of St. Louis in 1821, slaveowners in Illinois claimed all or part of Osage County for themselves, assigning it to Missouri under the concept of " Donation Land ". The citizens of Nixa chose not to be sold out and thus remained loyal to their state even after being taken off their property without compensation. In 1836, whenMissouri became a state, Nixa's situation changed significantly as most slaves had been freed by then-Governor John Crain and some free blacks who had joined him on his campaign trail while he was seeking election as Territorial Governor of Missouri. As a result, many African Americans decided to move permanently to Missouri due to new opportunities there than they could find back home in Illinois where slavery still prevailed despite Abolitionist efforts by Northern abolitionists like Andrew Johnson . As soon as Kansas opened its borders for white settlement in 1861 following the American Civil War , many black Kansans relocated eastward into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma ) from which they thought they would never again experience freedom . However, due largely to military campaigns led by General George Armstrong Custer against Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians near Fort Reno on July 27th- August 2nd 1876 those same people found themselves living within easy reach of eastern Oklahoma City where whites were beginning increasingly open about their desire for total domination over all aspects life on Earth including human beings

Nixa was founded in 1837 by Meriwether Lewis and his brother, John. The town was named after the Nixa River, which flows through the area. The Lewis brothers were exploring a new route for the Santa Fe Railroad when they discovered an abandoned wagon train on their way to Kansas City. They decided to build a trading post near the train station to collect supplies for their journey. The first store in Nixa was built on the corner of First and Broadway. In 1842, Nixa became part of Missouri Territory when that state was created from parts of Illinois and Missouri. In 1845, Nixa voted to become a city. In November of that year, Mayor James Sisco approved the incorporation of Nixa as a city with a population of 100 people. In 1865, Nixa became part of Union County when it was created from parts of Union and Pulaski counties. On February 3rd, 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant issued Executive Order No. 9887 giving all citizens within Union County voting rights in school elections at age 21 years old regardless of race or color: “This order is designed to prevent open discrimination against any class citizen by those who may have an interest therein” (Wright). This order helped make Nixa one of the most racially diverse cities in Missouri during this time period. In 1880, entrepreneur Wm Henson opened what is now called The Henson Store at Ninth and Broadway Streets in downtown Nixa; this store would be one of the earliest convenience stores in America (Heise). By 1890, The Henson Store had become one of the largest businesses in town with over 20 employees (Heise). During this time period, also around this time period there were two other larger businesses located on Ninth Street; these two businesses are now known as Downtown African American Museum and Pioneer Courthouse Square Shopping Center which are both still active today (Downtown African American Museum website www://www-demo1.discovermoscowMo/en/about_us/history/nixonamuseum/) . During World War II many residents served in various branches including military service and more recently as firefighters through local organizations such as The American Legion Auxiliary #2 (Lincoln Park fire department website www3s3p0ld3r8n0l@mail2) . After World War II many residents moved away or left town altogether due to economic reasons such as changes in technology or job opportunities found elsewhere (Heise). Many people who remain today remember early days when downtown areas like Lincoln Park were just filled with trucks coming into town for goods then going home again without stopping at any storefronts or restaurants because there wasn’t much else available locally once residents went outside for goods (Lincoln Park Historical Society website www4historiclausonpark4) .
