Nixa is a city in southwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Nixa was founded in 1871 by James Fenton and his brother-in-law, Charles Hutton as a small community on the banks of the White River. In 1892, it became an incorporated town and its name changed to Nixa after J.P. Morgan's company, Nixa Mines & Railroad Co., which built and operated a branch line from Nixa to Poplar Bluff in 1902. Nixa was named for General David Dixon's Indian allies who were instrumental in driving off the Shawnee Indians from that territory during the American Civil War (1812-1814). The first post office opened on July 4, 1871, with Atherton Post Office as its name. In 1892, Nixa became an incorporated town when it merged with nearby Jenningsville and Springdale townships to form what is now known as St. Louis County; however, it reverted to its original name in 1907 when it became part of City of Springfield Township within Kansas City County; again reverting back to its original name upon joining City of St Louis proper in 1910 under anti-incorporation statutes passed by the state legislature following passage of Act 8 of 1909 (StL Statutes § 44). The city saw significant growth during World War II due to MO-1 production at Ball molds plant #2 located here until 1951 when plant moved eastward into Mexico (now Mexico City) becauseBall products were no longer available here Due largely to this war effort and resultant rise in population density around Ballmold Plant #2 - which reached up to 100 people per square mile on some days dueball excess output over wartime standards - citizens erected numerous housing developments throughout downtown along State Route 36 known then as "Nixon Avenue" because most residents worked for or lived near Ballmold Plant #2 while they awaited production quotas generated by government planners establishing postwar industry boundaries
