The name Nixa commemorates John's father-in-law, General James Biddle Nix (1797-1872). In 1838, Nixa became an incorporated village under the name of Prairie Village. On October 15, 1845, Prairie Village incorporated as a city with a population of 3200 residents. Nixonville was established in 1888 as a post office within Prairie Village and remained so until it merged into Prairie Village on May 7, 1951. Nixonville had its first store building in 1886 and its first telegraph line extension in 1889. Nixonville also had its first school Building in 1886 which still stands today at 123 Elm Street
Nixa, Missouri was founded in 1837 by John Nix and his family. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to the discovery of oil resources in nearby Kansas City. In 1849, Nixa became a city with its own government. The population peaked at 508 in 1870, but declined following the Panic of 1873. The townsfolk unsuccessfully petitioned for incorporation into Kansas City in 1887. By 1920, Nixa had shrunk to just over 100 residents.
