When they arrived at their new site they found that they had not chosen wisely: the area was full of trees but also full of difficult terrain suitable only for hunting or trapping meager game rather than producing crops or harvesting timber necessary for their own subsistence. By 1851 enough people had settled around Nauvoo that it became known as "Nauvoo". In 1851 tensions between LDS missionaries from Utah who were seeking converts and Missouri settlers over land rights began to develop into a full-blown conflict known as The Great Mormon War (1850-1853). After months of fighting surrounding Nauvoo—in which many LDS members died—the Mormons retreated back across state lines into Illinois while others continued hostilities outside Missouri until July 5th when Nebuchadnezzar Blount Upson ceded all interest within Cass County (including Nauvoo) to Joseph Smith Jr., leader(s) thereof under military escort so that he could lead an army against neighboring Iowa Territory led by General James Kappeler (1795-1861). This event marks one significant turning point in American colonialism: after years characterized primarily by peaceful trade with Native Americans through treaties negotiated among chiefs and governors our southern border increasingly changed from open wilderness into fortified frontier where Indian nations competed fiercely for control over resources essential both militarily and economically
