From 1861 until 1865, Nixa produced over a million rounds of artillery ammunition per day. Today, Nixa is still an important ammo manufacturing powerhouse within the United States. A post office called Nixa was established in 1807, and remained open until it closed in 1865. Nixa was platted on April 14, 1859, by J.P. Beechey and Wm Tatum; it became a town on December 1, 1860. The first settler was Fayette Wallace who arrived August 4th that year with his family from Boone County, Kentucky Wallace served as Mayor from 1861-1862 and again from 1865-1867 A wagon road known as the Arkansas Road ran through Nixa from Independence (now Topeka) to this town which opened up huge amounts of farmland for cattle drives which would bring goods downriver to be traded for goods back upriver

Nixa was platted in 1857 and named for Major John Nixey who had surveyed the area. The first post office in Nixa was established on April 15, 1858, and operated until May 14, 1861. The first settler in Nixa was A.T. Smith who arrived in 1855 from Illinois. He built a house on the current site of Main Street which still stands today. In 1860, George Hines founded the Hines-Fenton Oil & Gas Company with his brother Hiram Fenton and others near present day Husbandry Lane and Mineral Road. In 1863 they donated land to build what would become University Park which included what is now Main Street and Railroad Avenue.. In 1865 Charles Sargent opened an grocery store on Main Street which became one of the most important businesses in town prior to its closure by J C Sargent in 1922 when he merged with General Tire & Rubber company parent corporation Energizer Industries Incorporated into General Tire Corporation making it one of America's largest companies with more than $100 billion annual sales as of 2016 according to Forbes magazine . The original locomotive depot also located on Railroad Avenue adjacent to University Park before it was razed in 1951 during redevelopment plans for that area as part of that larger city/county project called "Springfield Hills". In 1898–99 Wm Dickey built a small dam across Natural River upstream from where US 20 enters Clay County about two miles east of present-day downtown Nixa . This created Lake Quivira downstream from where US 20 crossed the river just south of present day First Baptist Church (now known as First United Methodist Church) . At this time it was known as "Dickey Dam" or simply "Dickey". In 1942 M B Griffin started a small gravel quarry next door to his restaurant called Griffin's Grits which remain open today as an agriculturalenterprise providing quality gravel for local development including various highway projects throughout central Missouri Today since being purchased by Parsons Brace Alloys LLC., Griffin's Grits has been restored and reopened as an agricultural museum exhibiting techniques used by many famous farmers during their years operating there including Bluegrass Legends Johnny Appleseed demonstrations etc .. Nixa residents have participated actively or passively throughout history both politically and socially through various organizations dating back over 100 years such as: Chamber Of Commerce (founded 1907), Knights Of Columbus (founded 1918), Presbyterian church (1902), African American Male Bible Society (established 1912), Mothers' Union Bible Society (established 1903). There are also numerous heritage societies focusing on period dress preservation such as Ladies Home Journal Historical society (established 1902) , National Cowboy Hall Of Fame Museum Association - president(2009-present)
