The Neosho Telescope was built in 1932 by Dr. John S. Ladd and Dr. Walter W. Webb, both of the Kansas Astronomical Society. The telescope was used for astronomy research until it was destroyed in a fire in 1955.
Neosho, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of northwest Missouri. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 1,953. It is part of Jackson County. The history of Neosho goes back to 1836 when three men named Lewis, Bell and Smith founded a trading post on what is now called "Hillcrest" Gulch. The post operated until 1851 when it was moved to present day Neosho after being damaged by a flood. In 1853, two brothers named Stephenson bought the post and continued operations until their death in 1865. In 1870, John Ladds acquired land east of Neosho and built a ranch that included parts of today's town. He also served as Mayor from 1889-1893 and from 1907-1910. In 1912, he sold his land to J C Gentry who used it for farming purposes before becoming an insurance agent in 1916 and later president of First National Bank of Neosho (now Citizens State Bank). In 1917, Gentry donated land for a high school which would serve as the nucleus for what is now known as Neosho High School. The first graduating class in 1918 had 12 students but enrollment increased to 24 in 1923 when new buildings were erected on adjacent property (now home to Hinsdale Elementary). In 1951, neosho's first club house was constructed on nearby Hillcrest Lane. In 1966, ground was broken for what would become Riverview Middle School which opened its doors that year with 36 students under guidance of Mrs Betty A Keyes Sr.. Since then there have been several major renovations including construction of Science Center (1991), gymnasium (2006), library annex (2009), and administration wing/pool hall addition (2012). In 2012-2013 both Riverview Middle School & High School underwentfacilities expansions costing over $40M making them one large building with more than 200 classrooms! This expansion will include: new science labs/gymnasium/laboratory; brand new football stadium turf field; Renovated Cafeteria - Now all brick with granite countertops; Physical Education Wing - New fields & facilities; 4 brandnew locker rooms & 2 breakfast areas; Widespread useof LED lighting throughout building…It’s no wonder that Neosho has quickly become “the go-to place for educational excellence” according to Parenting magazines!

Neosho was founded by Reuben and Nettie Gentry on December 28, 1874 as a trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. The Gentry family continued to live in Neosho until their deaths in 1949. Neosho's history began with its founding by two farmers from Wichita, Kansas who were looking for a trade spot on the banks of the Arkansas River. The Gentrys named their settlement "Neosho" after their home state of Nebraska where they had been living since 1868. They started trading goods with Native Americans and settlers along the riverbanks and quickly became known for their good quality cotton goods. The early years of Neosho were difficult because it was located so close to Wichita and there were few opportunities for outsiders to get involved in the town's development. However, over time new businesses opened up and Neosho slowly grew into what it is today - an important community within Sedgwick County that has played a significant role in Kansas culture and history. One of Neosho's most famous citizens is Reuben Gentry who led one of the earliest efforts to patent oil drilling techniques and helped develop Wichita into one of America's leading cities. He also served as Mayor of Wichita from 1916-1918 and again from 1930-1932 when he faced impeachment proceedings due to his involvement with World War I munitions production plants in Europe. In recognition of his contributions to Wichita during these years, he was given a honorary title - Mayor Emeritus - which he still holds today. Today, Neosho remains an important community with many residents active in local businesses and services throughout Sedgwick County including its wide range of cultural attractions such as its annual Oktoberfest celebration which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year; its museum which tells local history through exhibits or displays about everyday objects; its library which stocks more than 100 000 books including rare books; and its historic district which offers visitor access to numerous pioneer homes dating back to 1870s
