Neosho was founded on January 15, 1859 by mechanics and traders George Witherspoon and Ira Ewing. The town name was derived from the Neshoba River which flows through it. The first post office in Neosho was established on February 14, 1861, and opened to serve the community of Lathrop. On July 1, 1865, Neosho became a town when it elected its first mayor. On December 24 of that year, Neosho incorporated as a city under the provisions of an act passed by the General Assembly of Missouri. In 1910 Neosho annexed portions of El Dorado Township to form a new city limits; however this annexation did not take effect until 1912 because El Dorado Township had been dissolved three years earlier. In 1911 there were 3 businesses in town: A grocery store (owned by Julius Kapp), two cotton ginners (owned by Fenton & Henson), and one barber shop (owned by John Crouch). Businesses grew rapidly during World War I with increased production due to increased demand for munitions from Germany and other allies in the war effort; however after hostilities ended things slowed down before picking up again in 1920-1921 due to difficult economic times partially caused by prohibition laws passed during wartime America's "prohibition" period which made much buying alcohol illegal inside any state or local government structure including towns/cities across America including Neosho%. Neosho, Missouri is a town located in Labadie County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Neosho was founded by settlers who came from what is now eastern Iowa in 1854. The first store opened in 1855 and the first post office was established in 1857. By 1860, Neosho had a population of about 100 people and it began to grow rapidly due to agricultural production and local trade. In 1865, Neosho became a county seat and its population reached 2,000 by 1870. In 1880, the county seat moved to Hutchinson and the name changed again to Neosho in 1890 because of the influx of new residents from Illinois (then Des Moines). The town developed as a railroad center with two railroads serving it-the Cotton Belt Railroad and Kansas City Southern Railway-and many industries sprang up such as shoeing plants, meatpacking plants and breweries. At one time there were three banks in town-two national banks and one state bank-and six grocery stores. After being hit hard by World War II shortages of goods following the war's end, most businesses closed down during the postwar period but some reopened including an ice cream parlor that still operates today. In recent years much development has occurred within town limits with apartments being built on both sides of Highway 160 east of town while businesses have arisen around downtown which has seen revitalization efforts including new restaurants/bars/cafes/marketing spaces as well as retail space for locally owned businesses like hardware stores/lawn care services etcetera
