Neosho, Missouri is a town in north-central Missouri. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri metropolitan area. The name "Neshoba" means "a place where water flows". The Neosho community began as a post office in 1857 and developed around an agricultural center that functioned as a cattle feeder and market for surrounding farms. In 1870, two brothers founded the first white school in what would become Neosho. After several years of operations, the school closed due to lack of enrollment and money. In 1881, local farmers destroyed a dam built by the Arkansas River Company to reduce flooding during heavy rains. This event led to increased development around the new town site; in 1889, a store and hotel were built on Main Street. The following year saw another major development when Neosho became home to one of three schools serving children within Springfield's newly formed public school district. By 1893, there were also businesses and homes located in the new town limits; by 1908, it had grown into what is today known as Neosho Township. Neosho, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozark Mountains of western Missouri. Neosho was founded in 1881 by settlers from Illinois. The name derives from the Kiowa word Neshoba meaning "a place to hunt." The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location on the Kansas-Nebraska Railroad. In 1916, Neosho became a city and has since grown into one of the most populous communities in Ozarks. The town's history can be traced back to 1881, when settlers from Illinois arrived in what is now Neosho County. At that time, the area was part of Kansas Territory and there was no such thing as a city or town within its boundaries. As the population inflated throughout the years, some residents decided to create their own municipality – which they called Neshoba City. This decision may have been made because at that time there were very few municipalities within this region; most of what is now Ozarks had been acquired by Kansas Territory through purchase or treaty signings following Lincoln’s presidency. However, after Kansas Territory merged with Oklahoma in 1907, Neshoba City reverted back to its original name: Neosho County seat. Despite this change in name (and an unsuccessful effort by Mayor Landon Welch to rename it “Kansas City”), neorealism continued to dominate rural life until well into the 1960s; thus, Neshoba City remained one of only a handful of cities left within Nebraska and Iowa borders that did not experience any significant growth during those decades. In 1916, however, things changed for Neosho when it became a city under statehood laws passed by Missouri voters. At first glance this might appear paradoxical given that as a municipal entity it could not legally engage in any type of economic development; however, due to its location on KCRA radio station (the country’s first commercial FM station) and because other local businesses felt compelled to locate here due to proximity to major markets (Kansas City and Springfield), Neosho became one of Mo Valley’s Andes foothills boomtowns – quickly becoming one of America’s largest cities without losing much ground relative thereto over time. Today neorealism still dominates rural life at all levels; thus Mo Valley remains one of America’s last great regions remaining largely untouched by urbanization trends dating back more than half a century ago
Neosho was founded in 1836 by a group of Mormons who moved from Nauvoo, Illinois. It was the first Mormon settlement in Missouri. The town became an important center for Native American trade and commerce. The Iowa-Pacific Railroad passed through Neosho and made it a major supply stop for the railroad route. In 1886, the town was destroyed by fire and Reconstruction began in Neosho.
