Neosho was platted in 1839, and named for John Neosho. It was part of the Kansas Territory when it was organized in 1846. The town's first settler was Hiram P. Morton. In 1855, Neosho became a city and remained so until its incorporation as a town in 1907. The population of Neosho peaked at over 10,000 in the early 20th century; however, this growth stopped after World War I and the Great Depression. Since the late 21st century, the population has decreased by about 100 people each year due to migration from other areas in Missouri or Illinois.
