Neosho, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of western Missouri. The population was 5,392 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-based micropolitan area. The town began as a cluster of log cabins on a remote stretch of farm land near the present day town of Neosho. By 1870, Neosho had a full-time school and was home to about 150 people. The first store in town opened in 1872, and by 1879, there were three stores and four blacksmiths in Neosho. In 1881, two men named John Fenton and Ebenezer Higgins bought 8 acres (3 ha) of Section 6 south of the current town center for $1 cash only - this became known as "Fenton's Hill." They built a cabin there which served as their home until around 1915 when they sold it to Atherton Kincaid who built his first house on it in 1927. Kincaid died in 1951 and his wife took over running the business until her death in 1970; thereafter it passed through several families before being purchased by entrepreneur Darnell Hodge in 1984. In 1986, he added an additional story onto the original house which became known as "The Hodge House". Darnell Hodge operated The Blacksmith Shop from 1984-1998; during that time period, it produced approximately 2 million pounds (910 thousand kilograms) worth of metal products including copper plating, wrought iron fencing railing, shotguns shell cases and more. After leaving his business to focus on other interests he donated all but one share back to Neosho Township so that they may continue operating under state government auspices into the 21st century. Today The Blacksmith Shop remains open six days per week with Blanche Raburn currently working at the shop floor during office hours Monday thru Friday 10:00am - 4:00pm EST while her husband Bob produces products at their old place outside of town on Saturday mornings since 1995...Neosho has always been a melting pot where different cultures have come together to create something new each time...Today we are proud to be considered an Arts & crafts community with many businesses offering unique services such as quilting/garment design/printing/jewelry making etc., some doing this for fun while others do it because they enjoy what they do!

The history of Neosho is intertwined with that of the Missouri Ozarks. In 1821, General James K. Polk sent an army into eastern Iowa to purchase land for military purposes. When he returned to Missouri, he discovered that a large area of what is now Kansas had been bought by the United States government and designated as part of the Indian Territory. He decided to move westward and take possession of this territory, which included much ofKansas east of the Arkansas River. After reaching Kansas City, Polk published a proclamation proclaiming Kansas an open territory for settlement by all who would come forth and offer their services in creating it anew as a state within the Union. This event marked one step in the development of Neosho as a small town on the banks of the Raccoon River. The first settlers arrived in Neosho around 1854 from where they built their homes on land that today forms part of downtown Neosho. Many early residents were farmers who raised corn, hay, cattle and other livestock; some also engaged in fishing operations along both the Raccoon and Vermilion Rivers. By 1870, when Omaha Railway began construction through central Illinois en route to Omaha City., many Vernal farmers had relocated their herds northward to escape price tags associated with cotton production back south at New Orleans or Mobile Bayou (now Baton Rouge). As rail transportation increased access to markets throughout westernMissouriandsouthwesternOklahomaviathe MidwestRailroad system,, many farmsteads replaced traditional water buffalo or wicker fences with railroad ties during this period,. In 1870-71 two brothers named Prentice opened a store adjacent to what is now Nebraska Avenue; at this time there was only one grocery store per township across western Missouri (). Starting out as simply a general merchandise store,, Prentice soon became known for his fine produce items such as apples and tomatoes.. In 1888-89 Dickenson Hardware & Lumber opened on what later became Nebraska Avenue; this store served as local headquarters for several years before being moved downriver towards present day Hannibal Street (). Other significant businesses beginning around this time include Wagon Wheel Cafe (1892), Bankers Trust Company (1896), Armour Meat Market (1901) and First National Bank (1907). During World War I many people found work at various munitions plants near Springfield; these jobs included producing artillery shells (), engineers ()and mechanics ().
